Certain shows have changed the dynamics of the small screen as a medium and left a lasting impact on the audience. A case in point is Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (Kggk), an iconic show, which returned to the tube recently. Producer and content head for strategy at Atrangii channel, Nivedita Basu, who worked as one of the creative directors for Kggk, asserts, “Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii is a modern take on Ramayan and it will never run out of favour. It holds relevance even today. Every Indian household has watched it and the soaring TRPs when it aired on the tube were proof of it. Everyone drew parallels between the characters they resonated with on the show. It is the Baghban (the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer that was released in 2013) of Indian television. It teaches you the importance of family values, retaining goodness around evil, and how evil turns good eventually.

After going through a gallery of leading ladies in speculative and totally unfounded news reports, it is Asin who has been finalized to play the lead opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Bhushan Kumar's tentatively titled film Mere Apne. The film is being directed by Umesh Shukla, whose debut work Omg Oh My God, on ritualistic religiosity created quite a stir across the country. This time again Umesh tackles a thorny issue. Rishi Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan were signed to play father and son some months ago. The leading lady's slot remained vacant with names as far-ranging as Kareena Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor being thrown around. The director firmly denied approaching these ladies. Asin has finally been roped in to play what is being seen as an "important dramatic role". Asin and Abhishek have an interesting history. They were supposed to star together in Ashutosh Gowariker's Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se.

Kamal Haasan's daughter Shruti has unknowingly triggered off a war of nerves in the film trade. This Friday, she appears in two Hindi films simultaneously. While in Prabhu Dheva's Ramaiya Vastavaiya she plays a nice sweet innocent girl in love, in Nikhil Advani's D-Day she plays the hard-hitting role of a prostitute. Quite a culture and moral shock for the audience, and a clash that the team behind both the films desperately wanted to avoid. Says Nikhil Advani, "They were supposed to release on a different date. When I heard they were coming on the same day, I immediately messaged the producer. However there was no response. More than anything else, audiences are going to be shocked to see Shruti transform within one Friday so drastically. I guess audiences are mature enough to take that king of change. I remember Gulzar Saab's Koshish and Parichay were released within months of one another.

His has always been a progressive mind-set. His subjects and characters have always stood against communalism and in favour of national unity.”
If that was not enough, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also praised Gulzar about the fine example which he has set both for his country and for future generations. “Gulzar has always emphasised humanity and empathy in all his works. This is a great way of strengthening the unity and integrity of our country. I believe...

Bollywood’s no stranger to disabled characters, but having disabled actors play those roles is a rarity. This makes upcoming kiddy flick Bubblegum a departure from the norm. The film stars a 16-year-old boy, Sohail Lakhani, who is deaf and mute. His character, not surprisingly, also shares the same impairments. “From Sanjeev Kumar in Koshish (1972) to Ranbir Kapoor in the upcoming Barfee, normal people have played these roles, so why can’t a boy who is actually deaf and mute?” asks director Sanjivan Lal. He reasons that while accomplished actors are usually bang-on with their expressions when portraying such characters, it’s their ...

On one of our flights I had the pleasure of flying the great comedian Asrani. We hit it off well right from the outset, one of the reasons being our common surname. So naturally we started digging into our respective family trees, and to my astonishment we turned out to be ?distantly- related cousins?. I said ?Govardhan (his first name) you are a star comedian! I am really proud to be your cousin ?to which he replied ?Arre don?t call me Govardhan, everyone calls me Asrani, you also call me that only.?
