A very enjoyable mystery.

Having just been released from prison, Arthur Payne believes his fortunes are about to improve when he meets the wealthy Theo Gaunt, who comes to his aid, and offers him a job.

A good episode to begin the fourth series, it's an imaginative mystery, with several twists and turns. I wouldn't say there's anything particularly unique or original, but if you're a fan of mysteries and suspense, there's enough here to wet your whistle. It's very easy to follow and straightforward.

Payne is set up to play a Patsy, but fortunately he has one or two friends on his side. It's definitely a case of David battling Goliath, with the latter coming in the form of a group of powerful businessmen.

There's a superb cast here to enjoy, Maurice Denham, Anthony Bate, John Arnatt and two terrific performances from Brian Peck and John Carson.

Fair play that shopkeeper had the right idea about banks.

Thoroughly enjoyable mystery, 8/10.

Unlike with many of the lesser EWMT episodes you can actually follow a proper constructed story in this one. My fave aspect is the performance of John Carson as Inspector Jackson. JC puts in a witty, intelligent, strong but sensitive turn and is a delight to watch including a scene with his real life wife actress who also features.

A Case Of Deja Vu

Warning: Spoilers
It is little surprising that with so many films to make, and not always relying on Wallaces original novel that the writers had to reuse parts of plots that had appeared in previous films. In this instance it is the film show which masks the murders departure ,crime and return, thus creating a false alibi So there is not a great deal of suspense in this film as it is clear that the man arrested for the crime clearly could not have done it.There are a number of familiar faces in the cast the most memorable of which is Maurice Denham in the lead role.Always one of the most reliable of actors he gives a solid performance. One always wonders if it was a bit of a comedown from actors who appeared normally in top of the bill films to appear in small low budget films like this .
