Having just been released from prison, Arthur Payne believes his fortunes are about to improve when he meets the wealthy Theo Gaunt, who comes to his aid, and offers him a job.
A good episode to begin the fourth series, it's an imaginative mystery, with several twists and turns. I wouldn't say there's anything particularly unique or original, but if you're a fan of mysteries and suspense, there's enough here to wet your whistle. It's very easy to follow and straightforward.
Payne is set up to play a Patsy, but fortunately he has one or two friends on his side. It's definitely a case of David battling Goliath, with the latter coming in the form of a group of powerful businessmen.
There's a superb cast here to enjoy, Maurice Denham, Anthony Bate, John Arnatt and two terrific performances from Brian Peck and John Carson.
Fair play that shopkeeper had the right idea about banks.
Thoroughly enjoyable mystery, 8/10.
