A Five Minute Film That's Three Minutes Too Long...
JoeytheBrit2 August 2009
Most people would be hard-pushed to identify a five-minute film that's probably twice as long as it needs to be, but anybody who was watched this early short would probably put it forward for consideration.

It's quite interesting to begin with as we see a gigantic metal bucket being manoeuvred into position in a well in the foundry floor. Then a gate is opened and molten metal begins to flow down a curved chute before spilling into the bucket. All this preparation takes maybe ninety seconds which means we're then faced with three-and-a-half minutes of watching the molten metal flowing into the bucket while a few men wander around, waiting for the bucket to be filled - and for the concept of health and safety regulations to be introduced so that they no longer have to skip over the chute when they want to cross the room.

Tapping a Furnace (1904)

During the early 1900's Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company made a number of industrial films that allowed the public to see what went on inside their buildings. Needless to say, these films didn't contain any sort of plot but some might find them interesting.

Once again we've got a film that could have been entertaining if only it didn't run so long. Yes, this film is just five minutes but after the first minute or so we see nothing new so we basically get bored and by the time the five minutes are up you'll be wanting to hit the stop button. The most fascinating aspect are the first two minutes where we see a large bucket being lowered into the ground and then metal being poured into it. After this we basically just see the same thing happening and the film loses its entertainment value.
