So Many Questions
JoeytheBrit23 June 2009
This would probably make quite a dramatic subject for a film if we were able to see the blinding glare of the molten material and hear the hiss of steam as it is poured into a gigantic mould, but what we see here is fairly dull stuff. It might also be more interesting if we actually knew what was going on: what is being made? Why do a couple of men with giant flaming cotton buds poke them under the mould case every now and then? Why, when all the molten liquid has been poured into the mould, do two men climb on top of it and prod it with sticks? Why does a third officious looking man wander back and forth, doing nothing but look important? So many questions, probably none of which will ever now be answered.

Casting a Guide Box (1904)

During the early 1900's Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company made a number of industrial films that allowed the public to see what went on inside their buildings. Needless to say, these films didn't contain any sort of plot but some might find them interesting.

In this film we see a large container that has various items being poured into it. On top of the container are some men who appear to be mixing everything. These Westinghouse shorts really aren't all that entertaining and especially when you consider their length. This one here clocks in at just around six minutes and its honestly pretty boring to watch, although it remains slightly entertaining because it at least gives you a chance to see what was going on inside the factory. Obviously safety standards were pretty bad back in the day and its easy to see how accidents could happen.
