Warning: Spoilers
Sita (Smita patil) and Raghu (Sadhu Meher) are forced out of their home due to flooding. Raghu's father dies, unable or unwilling to leave the home. They are forced to seek shelter with Sita's brother some ways away. Sita's elder brother is married to Leela (Rohini Hattangidi), who is from a well to do family.

Leela and her husband don't yet have any children. Sita and Raghu have two kids. While staying as guest in her brother's home, they do various chores in exchange for food and shelter. It is evident that Sita and Leela are not fond of each other. One day Leela asks Raghu to go get some wheat from the market for 5Rs. On his way to market, he runs into an old acquaintance with whom he shares his tragedy and misfortunes. His friend suggests visiting the Debasishu (child god) that is in town and quite popular with the locals. People have witnessed all kinds of miracles upon visiting the Debasishu, he says. He figures that with the left over change he can try his luck there as well, there is a 19c toll to visit Debashishu and ask for blessings. Once inside, he is shocked to see the Debashishu, he/she was his own child. A child they had abandoned upon birth after being convinced to do so by the town priest Ojhaji/Pandit and his son-in-law, jaadugar. Both are bogus pandits with no other motive than to exploit weak, illeterate, and poor for their own gains. The child was bon with 3 heads and 4 limbs, the pandits ask them to get rid of it or else the village will destroy them for brining misfortune to the town. Raghu asks Jaadugar to share 1/2 of his earnings from running the scam with him, when kicked out he steals some of the money. He is chased by the townsmen and has to run away. In this process, he loses all of the groceries as well.

At home, Leela has to go out to visit Debashishu. Sita uses this time to milk the cows secretly so that her children can have some milk, one is about 2 and the older one about 5 or so. Slowly she begins to worry about Raghu who has not returned from the market, he has been gone for a while now. Sita's brother comes back with a fish for his sister and their kids, she asks him to help find her husband. Her brother goes around the town but is not able to find him. He does not return through late night. Sita's brother is worried about her, but there is very little he can do as Leela is quite overbearing and does not promote good relationship between the brother and sister. Late night, Raghu comes back on his own and shares the story with Sita, that the Debashishu is their own child. Upon hearing the story an emotional Sita insists that she want's to go see her child, Raghu is adamant she can't. He wants to impregnate his wife again to produce another child with three heads so he can use the child like the pandits did with Debashishu. After some resistance from Sita to not have intercourse he gives up. They can barely survive as a family of four, any more would certainly make it impossible to survive, intercourse is an extremely risky financial proposition for them. Despite desire to better themselves, they are exasperated, unable to find any way out of their unfortunate predicament. They are trapped in space with barbed wires around with no way out...
