My very stale Kentucky home
Terrytoons Studios' output is variable but when seeing it as a completest it is also quite fascinating. Most of it ranges between mediocre and pretty decent, though there are cartoons of theirs that are more and less. How effective Mighty Mouse was as a character always depended on the material, and his cartoons were variable. Some were decent or even pretty good. Some were pretty weak.
1946's 'My Old Kentucky Home' is one of the pretty weak ones, one of the worst of Terrytoons' 1946 output and the worst up to this early stage of it. It was a very busy year for Mighty Mouse, most of the 1946 output had him as the star and consisted of his theatrical series. Of which 'My Old Kentucky Home' is among the worst and a real step down from the previous Mighty Mouse cartoon 'The Wicked Wolf', which did tread familiar territory but the outstanding music, the energy and the character of the wolf livened things up and somehow it worked. This also treads familiar territory, but somehow the impact is not the same here and rather the opposite.
By all means there are good things in 'My Old Kentucky Home'. The music is its usual lush and characterful self, not just adding to the action but enhancing it as well. The animation is equally great in quality, especially the backgrounds and landscapes, the characters are well drawn and the colours are really beautiful on the eye.
Best and only interesting character is the wolf, a very archetypal villain sort of character but at least there's something to him.
Mighty Mouse however is with very little personality here and his presence actually really is not needed, he adds very little to the cartoon. Nell is very difficult to root for, no charm, no real likeability, pretty bratty actually. The character dynamic is lacking in tension or even much chemistry. Just my thoughts. The story is the sort of one that was already creaking in age in the early 30s and there is nothing fresh in it or any momentum.
Also agree that it is a hodge-podge of ideas (some irrelevant, there could have been a better beginning than the completely disconnected from everything else here) put into an overflowing kitchen sink which made it feel rather bizarre. The gags are far too few in number, next to none, and when there are attempts at any they are not funny, tired and seen it all before. The writing is pure corn and there is no tension or surprises because it is so obvious how things are going to end.
On the whole, weak. 3/10
