On obscure little Italian film, roughly a muddled Italian attempt at black comedy. Marcello is obsessed with his mother Paolina (Senta Berger), and not in an altogether healthy way.
Somewhere towards the middle of the film the Paolina character suddenly disappears, explanation: she has died. From then, the whole film changes gear. I have the deep suspicion that Miss Berger simply refused to take further part in the film and the film makers tried to rescue what they could. In the copy I watched she was not even credited (despite being the title character), suggesting that she disowned the film.
