And you thought YOUR mother-in-law was a vicious hag?
Coventry12 October 2023
"Murder in Law" is a tremendously entertaining straight-to-video horror/thriller that evoked a lot of laughs. Only... I'm not too sure the cast & crew likes to read so. All through the film, you get the inescapable impression that everyone involved in this production was dead-serious about it, and that they are also convinced they are part of a genuinely nail-biting & hair-rising suspense classic. This, of course, makes it even funnier!

It was the late-80s and, after a long decade full of slashers, movies about brute and masked men chasing teens through the woods weren't good enough anymore. In 1987, however, director Joseph Ruben came up with an intriguing variation on the traditional slasher formula. In "The Stepfather" the maniacal killer infiltrates into a family and commits his grisly kills from inside a warm and cozy nest. "Brilliant!" is also what writer/director Tony Jiti Gill must have thought when he saw it, and he promptly developed the idea to replace the stepfather character with a deranged old mother-in-law!

Marilyn Adams stars in the role of her life as Milly; the evil-gazing nightmare of a mother (-in-law). Not since Priscilla Alden in "Crazy Fat Ethel" I have witnessed such a devoted hag. Milly escapes from a mental institution in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Actually, she simply walks out of there as if the clinic was an open bar. One day later, Milly rings a doorbell somewhere in California and she's reunited with her beloved son Bill. Even though Bill hasn't seen mommy dearest in more than ten years and doesn't take the slightest effort to verify her story, he warmly welcomes her in the house, albeit much against the will of his - much less naïve - wife and teenage children. Evidently, the poor housecat is the first to disappear. Then the Latina housemaid. Well, what do you expect? Milly is stark-raving-mad!

What makes "Murder-in-Law" so amusing is the fact that Milly does more than killing a few people left and right. She carries around a massive suitcase, pulls the weirdest grimaces, parades around the house in clothes that are way too revealing for her age, throws her food at the maid, and truly sucks at pretending to be the poor & defenseless victim. The film is also stuffed with random and unintentionally hilarious elements. For example, the other patients at the asylum are as stereotypical as can be. They deliberately bang their heads against the walls and continuously shriek incomprehensible things. The ending is bizarre as well, since lead actor Joe Estevez simply goes out fishing and leaves it up to his wife and daughter to face the wrath of Milly. Maybe the production ran out of money and couldn't afford Estevez for the grand finale.

Poor Joe Estevez, by the way. I reckon his brother (Martin Sheen) and nephews (Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez) made quite some fun of him for starring in this.

This film was better then i thought it would be but it was still crap the movies about how a woman kills an orderly and escapes from a mental hospital and gos to stay at her sons house but he did not no she killed the orderly and that she was in the mental hospital for 8 years. The film stars actors like Joe Estevez,Marilyn Adams,Sandy Snyder,Darrel Guilbeau and Debra Lee Giometti just to name a few.The acting in this film was bad except for Joe Estevez who does an OK job at acting in this film and i recommend this film to rent but save your money and do not buy this film.Over all this film was bad with its good scenes and my rating is 4 out of 10.

good movie

Saw it at halloween with college friends and we all loved it. Although it made us again about getting married and having a mother-in-law. Pretty stylized, but it got the impression that the filmakers didn't have much money. Loved the dark tongue and cheek humor. The old lady is great. JM Matthews

I liked it

Warning: Spoilers
I recently bought a bunch of horror and sci-fi VHS at a closing video store and among them was this flick. I've never heard of it before and other than Joe Estevez didn't know any of the cast members... Well, I was pleasantly surprised.

I enjoyed the movie more than I was expecting. Even though the plot is pretty predictable it did have a couple of nice death scenes and the leading lady (the one playing the escapee) was good in the role.

There is a little blood, some nudity courtesy of Rebecca Russell and a few characters (hospital staff, boyfriend, maid) pop up to increase the body count.

Not a very fast paced film, but the ending was pretty good in my opinion.

A magical mystery tour of crazy with academy credentials
Gingras-Kevin17 June 2013
I can't recall the last time I went to the theater and saw a horror film that actually scared me, that is, until I saw "Murder in Law". I was a wreck during this movie - the suspense is wound like a tight wire and it just pulls more and more until you feel like it's going to snap right at you - and it does. Arlene (Sandy Snyder) has the chops to be an Academy Award winner, if not for this film it will be for a future project. Bravo to the entire cast for a stunning, scary and edge of your seat adventure ! Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the these find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives. On a bitterly cold night, a group has set their sights on the bloody Sanatorium to answer the age old question: Is there life after death?

"Where's My Coffee?!"...

Warning: Spoilers
MURDER IN LAW opens in a mental institution, where a patient named Milly (Marilyn Adams) has been busy decorating her room with the latest in psychotic design. She soon escapes by simply walking out of the facility, and impaling a nosy nurse for good measure.

Milly, along with her sofa-sized suitcase, heads straight for San Francisco to "drop in" on her son, Bill (Joe Estevez). His family is thrilled. When asked about her whereabouts for the past ten years, Milly, being a master of deception, says that she's been in Paris, France.

Obviously, Milly must stay, so, a bedroom is supplied. Bill's wife, Arlene (Sandy Snyder) is overjoyed. For the most part, Milly is able to keep her cool, only coming unglued while alone in her room. When not in her room, Arlene snoops through her stuff, finding some of it disturbing. Unlike her idiot husband, Arlene also notices that Milly's behavior is a bit off.

Where's the cat? Mmm, is that stew?

It's not long before Milly starts whirling out of control. Her impromptu dance through town is a showstopper! As she continues to unravel, Bill remains immune to reality.

Oh no!

Carmen (Debra Lee Giometti), the beautiful housekeeper has smoked a funny cigarette with Bill's son, Todd (Darrel Guilbeau), causing her clothes to fall off! She shouldn't have left that hot iron out where Milly could find it! What else could possibly happen?

What the...?

Milly, is that you? Grrg! Eeeeaarrgh!

Marilyn Adams is a bonkers force of nature in this movie, and if they gave out Oscars for such things, she'd be Meryl-Bloody-Streep! Watch now and witness the miraculous! You'll never look at chocolate pie in quite the same way again, either!...
