Like WITCH HUNTER ROBIN or DOOMED MEGALOPOLIS (to cite but a pair), VAMPIRE PRINCESS MIYU is one of those low-key but beautifully done anime that leave one wanting more. Rest assured there are monsters aplenty (you won't find yourself nodding off- like you might if you tried to sit through, say, TWILIGHT OF THE DARK MASTER or somesuch overblown production), but the whole approach here is understated- which works to the series's benefit. Subtle is better, no doubt about it. Over the past decade or so, there have been a number of American teleshows (mostly produced in Canada) that are really nothing more than live-action anime; most deal with supernatural elements, but few manage to deal as effectively with the subject(s) as VAMPIRE PRINCESS MIYU. Seems to me it's about time some of this stuff started turning up on network television. It's long overdue.
