After the death of his wife and the murder of his son, Professor Gregor Antonov, a European chess master and key scientist in an important Soviet defense project, has become increasingly disillusioned with his work in the Cold War arms race. Disheartened, he has thoughts of defecting to the west, where he will live a quiet life together with his 15-year-old daughter Sasha, his only remaining family member. Soviet officials are however well aware of Antonov's hopes, and thus the security around him is rigorous. Jim Phelps and his team of agents are assigned to the mission of smuggling Antonov and his daughter out of the Soviet Union and to safety in the west. The perfect opportunity to do this appears to be during a chess tournament in Czechoslovakia, where the chess master Antonov is due to participate.

As the King of the country of Bajan-Du suddenly passes away, it is expected that his young son, Prince Mikos, should continue his father's work and take his father's place on the throne. However, according to Bajan-Du tradition, no one can be king of the country without first passing "the ceremony of the golden lions" - a ceremony the late King's brother Ki is determined to fix so that the Prince can have no possibility of solving it. He wants the Prince to die trying to find the answer to the puzzle. Ki, who is next in line to the throne, hopes to thereafter rule Bajan-Du and put an immediate stop to all the modernization and western influences his late brother was so determined to bring into their ancient country. Jim Phelps and his team of agents get the mission to save the life of Prince Mikos, and ruin all of Ki's plans.

They must bring a definite halt to Colonnades's way of acquiring the drugs which he distributes in the first place. This, Colonnades achieves, by robbing relief organisations of medial supplies destined for third world countries.

As dictator Luis Berezan began to get increasingly weakened by old age and illness, the people in his country of Alcante finally saw it fit to start a long-awaited revolution against his regime. Luis Berezan and his wife Emelia fled the country - not without first, however, emptying Alcante's treasury - and sought asylum in the United States. In the US, they live a life in luxury, while the people in the bankrupt country they left behind starve. Jim Phelps and his team of agents get the assignment to locate and steal back the money originally stolen by the Berezans, with the purpose of returning it to the people of Alcante.

This information Six then likes to use for blackmail purposes, leading him to control a number of men and women in very high positions. His main adversary at the moment is Senator Tom Oxenford, who wants Six indicted by a grand jury for being involved in a blackmail conspiracy against the American government. Jim Phelps and his team of agents are assigned to making certain that Six really is indicted by the jury, and to find and erase his secret records of blackmail information.

Jim Phelps and his team of agents are assigned to the mission of finding and neutralising a dangerous stolen bacteria called Xerxes, which, when exposed to, will rapidly assist in aging all of the vital organs of the human being. The bacteria is believed to have been stolen by Catherine Balzac, who, apart from running a Parisian night club, traffics in black-market intelligence.

When former IMF-agent Laura Ann Wilson is murdered, Jim Phelps's fingerprints are found at the scene of the crime, making him the police's prime suspect in the case. Knowing however that Phelps was in Thailand at the time of the murder working on a case, the IMF-secretary realises that Phelps must have been framed by someone. Jim identifies his former agent colleague Russell Acker as the only person who could possibly be responsible. After having been in a serious car accident 14 years ago, Acker lost his mind and started murdering beautiful women. Jim Phelps, Laura Ann Wilson, and two other female agents eventually put him away for life in a mental institution. Acker saw being caught by his own colleagues as the definitive betrayal and he must now finally have found a way of getting his own back from inside his high security prison for the mentally insane.

The American submarine USS Concorde is dramatically lost at sea and the few surviving crew members report that the submarine was blown apart by a torpedo containing a sophisticated computer virus. This virus killed the submarine's computer system, leading to the underwater ship being impossible to control. Jim Phelps and his team of agents get the mission to find the virus program which sunk the Concorde, so that an antidote program can be created. They have to find the virus's creators, and put them out of the virus creating business for good.

Jim Phelps and his team of agents are assigned to finding out what has happened to more than 100 young girls who have mysteriously disappeared from the American town of New Orleans. The police in New Orleans are convinced that the girls have fallen victims to Jake Morgan, a jazz club owner who they also believe is responsible for an extensive white slavery business that kidnaps young girls and sells them as slaves to countries in Africa and Asia. If Morgan really is guilty of these accusations, it is up to the IMF-team to find the evidence and hopefully also a complete records of all the girls that have been sold through the organisation. If records can be found, the girls in question can be tracked, and hopefully also ultimately saved from slavery.

Jim Phelps and his team of agents get the mission to destroy a South East Asian drug smuggling organisation known as "The Golden Serpent", and to locate their business dealing records. The identity of the organisation's leader has always remained a mystery. The thing that is known, however, is that another team of IMF-agents recently moving in on one of the organisation's key people, Prince Selimun of Benarli, have just had their mission blown and their leader murdered.

Following that Prince Arkadi, ruler of the small principality of Valance, met, fell in love with, and finally married, Elaine Murchison, the daughter of an American ambassador, the Prince began being increasingly exposed to western ways, values, and ideas. As a result of his new wife and her American lifestyle, he began modernising and democratising his country, none of which pleased Gregor Caron, an anti-American and leader of a group known as "The Valance Red Garde". It is believed that Caron now plans to have the Princess Elaine murdered in order to stop all her western influence on her husband. Jim Phelps and his team of agents get the mission to stop this murder from ever taking place, something which however turns out to be more difficult than they first imagined. Not only is Valance just about to host an important film festival, where huge crowds and public appearances from both the Prince and Princess would make her a very easy target, but Caron also appears to have hired a hit man to do the job for him. The elusive hit man in question is to the world only known by his code name of "Coyote."

Self-declared Defence Minister Ivan Savitch, operating in a Baltic country without the consent of its democratically elected Prime Minister, is responsible for the death or imprisonment of more than one hundred dissidents. Savitch has, however, recently learned that someone has kept records of his atrocities over the years and hidden them away in an ancient relic, the Cross of St. Bonaface, which, since then, has been stolen from his county's National Museum. Savitch is convinced that the man behind the theft is Father Thomas Vallis, a priest who has openly criticized Savitch and his methods. Despite no evidence to confirm this theory, Savitch has imprisoned Vallis in the notorious prison of "The Tower." There he will remain until he either talks or dies. Jim Phelps and his team of agents are assigned to the mission of freeing Father Vallis from the high security prison. In addition, they must find the hidden records of all of Savitch's crimes - records which will, undoubtedly, put Ivan Savitch away for a long time.

In the Asian country of Kangji, the military leader Xang Kai plans to obliterate the entire government by detonating a nuclear bomb in the capital's city center. His strategy is to blame the attack on the United States and take control of his country, emerging as the undisputed leader. To set up the bomb, he has taken help from the beautiful female terrorist Sun Li, who has agreed to help on condition that her religious leader, "The Holy One", may return to Kangji under Xang Kai's rule. "The Holy One" has for a long time lived in exile outside the country borders. Jim Phelps and his team of agents get the mission to locate and defuse the nuclear bomb, thus stopping all of Xang Kai's devious plans.
