Okay, if on the strange side
The Daffy and Speedy cartoons are not great on the whole, some are pretty bad(especially See Ya Later Gladiator) but they are watchable enough. Chilli Corn Corny is another Daffy/Speedy cartoon that is okay if nothing special. There are some high points, with Daffy and the music coming off best. Daffy is very amusing and true to character and he is not devoid of charisma either. The music is full of energetic rhythms and lively orchestration complete with a catchy main theme, even if it can get a little repetitive. The crow is an amusing character as well with some of the funnier material of the cartoon, while some gags do raise a laugh, the crow's sign at the end for example was funny. Mel Blanc is characteristically great providing the voices, then again Blanc was consistently good who brought his all to everything he did even when the material was beneath him. The animation and Speedy in particular don't work. The animation is still very sparse and flat, granted budgeting was lower at this time but the animation surely didn't have to be this cheap(it does look better than the animation of See Ya Later Gladiator admittedly). Speedy's personality is very bland this time round and he feels underused too, there are points in Chill Corn Corny when you question why he was here in the first place. He and Daffy really don't gel here, their partnering often didn't make sense depending on the scenario of the cartoon but with the rapport between them and the crow it didn't register and actually came across as rather strange. The dialogue has some nice moments but does lack crispness and can sound wit-less, and the timing of the humour is off as well as the pace. There are some decent gags but the cartoon constantly feels rushed and abrupt, with transitions feeling confused and choppy. In conclusion, okay if nothing special, along with The Spy Swatter it was also one of their stranger outings. There's better in the series like Daffy Rents, Skyscraper Caper, Snow Excuse and Swing Ding Amigo but worse too like with A Haunting We Will Go, Rodent to Stardom, Speedy Ghost to Town and A Squeak in the Deep (and the less said about The Chcolate Chase and especially See Ya Later Gladiator the better). 5/10 Bethany Cox
