After finding a note in Carolee's office with Toni Ferra's name and telephone number, Dan questions Carolee who admits that Toni lost her job and wondered if Matt would have a job for her. Dan hurts Carolee's feelings by accusing of her impulsiveness and acting on her emotions. Later Dan demands that he be given the results of the tests Althea is running as soon as they come back from the lab. In the doctors' lounge, John compares himself and Althea to Kate and Petrucchio from Taming of the Shrew, but Althea insists she isn't interested in him or his past. Steve arrives at Carolee's office and finds Emma waiting for Carolee and Dan. Noticing that Emma is wearing the cameo, Steve realizes that it bothered Dan and says that he hopes Dan doesn't keep Carolee caged in an attempt to possess her. When Emma suggests that Dan's possessiveness reflects his desire to make Carolee happy, Steve retorts that Carolee has looked anything but lately. At home, Emma receives a phone call from a repairman. She tells Carolee and Dan that Big Ben can't be fixed because the parts are no longer made, prompting Dan to suggest putting the clock downstairs in the playroom. John interrupts Nick and Althea's conversation. Althea asks John to leave the outpatient clinic, which he does, though he insists he'll be back. Matt delivers Toni Ferra's lab assistant application to Nick, who complains that if she's young and single, she'll draw too much attention from the interns and never get any work done. Nick shows Matt the lithium research Mike did and suggests that maybe the lab can synthesize a compound to help Greta. Hank tells Nick that he bombed out with Mike and doesn't want to get any more involved in the situation with Mike. Althea goes to look at an apartment and changes her mind when she discovers that John is renting in the same hotel. John theorizes that there's nothing left between Althea and Nick, so she's free to pursue their relationship. To get away from John, Althea phones Nick and says that she has decided to take the apartment in his building.

Nick wonders why Althea changed her mind about taking the apartment. Althea tells Nick that Steve considers the two of them a shining example of burying the past to become friends. John and Nick disagree about using lithium derivatives to treat Greta. John persuades Matt to approve a special project involving the outpatient clinic, and consequently will need Althea's assistance. Manipulated by John, Matt agrees to be the one to inform Althea about the project. After Althea gives her the positive pregnancy test results, a distraught Carolee begs her not to tell Dan and reveals that the baby is Steve's.

A nervous Nick prepares for Althea's arrival and invites her to stay in his apartment while they wait to meet the building super. Althea tells Nick that she and John were in the hotel lobby, not his room, when she phoned Nick from a public phone. Later, he convinces her to let him fix them a drink, and she begins to relax. Alone in her office, Carolee mulls over her predicament. Steve arrives to ask if she has decided whether or not they can be friends. He admits that he knows it's over between them, but suggests they not hang on to bitterness when they shared something beautiful. When Althea broaches the subject of Steve, Carolee quickly and emphatically says that she'll never tell Steve that he's the baby's father. Althea angrily refuses Matt's request that she assist John with his research project, and chastises Matt for using her to get himself out of a spot. Emma feels that Carolee is holding something back about the pregnancy, but Carolee reassures her that she can't keep anything from her mother. Later, Carolee remembers a day after their trip when she told Steve that she couldn't handle the pressure of lying to Emma. Back in the present Carolee wishes that she could tell Emma the truth.

Martha surmises that Nick has appointed himself Althea's protector from John and tells him not to cry to her when he finds a hole in his shining armor. Mike shares good news with Hank and Nick about graduating med school. Nick returns the favor to Mike with news of the lithium derivative research project. When Matt can only offer him a six month probationary contract due to his low senior grades, Mike angrily accuses Matt of bending over backward to punish him for being his son.

Cathy wants to stop by Carolee's office because she has something on her mind. After Carolee recalls the night that Cathy came unannounced to Steve's apartment, leading to Carolee's breakup with Steve, she wonders what else Cathy could have to say. After John leaves, Maggie comes out of the examining room and lets Althea know that she overheard everything. Althea tells Maggie the complete story of her relationship with John and how deeply he hurt her. Carolee explains to Emma that Steve never had an affair with Cathy Ryker. Emma encourages Carolee to tell Dan about the baby and is stunned when Carolee confesses that Steve is the father.

Carolee has to consider Emma's advice that she tell Dan about the pregnancy before he figures it out and wonders why she kept the news from him. Maggie fears that Matt will see the turmoil in her face following Althea's confession. Nick mentions to Maggie his happiness over his newfound friendship with Althea. Maggie counters that she doesn't want to see any of them hurt but backs off when Nick suspects that she knows something he doesn't. Nick tells Maggie about the lithium project. Emma's lament, "if only you hadn't gone away for that weekend," echoes in Carolee's thoughts, prompting her to recall the day Steve invited her. Dan arrives home and claims to be shocked, not angry, at Carolee's agreement to be friends with Steve. Carolee finally tells Dan that she's pregnant.

Maggie clams up when Matt speculates that Maggie is keeping something else from him. Nick visits Althea in her new apartment and promises not to make a nuisance of himself as her neighbor. Maggie confesses to Matt what she overheard between Althea and John in the outpatient clinic. Matt and Maggie find Greta playing loud rock music in the middle of the night instead of sleeping.
Tue, Feb 2, 1971
John apologizes to Althea for the scene in the outpatient clinic, but she says it doesn't matter. Maggie wants to see John about Greta. Althea urges Carolee to begin seeing an obstetrician. Carolee assures Althea that by living the lie that Dan is the father of her baby, she's going to get over her compulsion for honesty. Maggie consults with John, who urges her to tell Greta's teacher about the brain damage. John takes advantage of Maggie to persuade Althea into cooperating with the research project. After Dan mentions Sky Haven, Carolee remembers the beginning of the evening she spent there with Steve and realizes that she can't tell the truth.
Wed, Feb 3, 1971
Dan wants to know if Althea and Carolee have calculated her due date and begins to plan the child's future, causing Carolee to become upset. When Billy reminds Carolee of the Valentine's Day bazaar at school, Dan accuses him of pestering her. Dan gleefully phones Steve with news of Carolee's pregnancy. Emma reminds Carolee that she only lasted ten days lying about the weekend she spent with Steve and wonders how she can keep up this lie for the rest of her pregnancy. Mike tells Hank that he's considering other hospitals after the raw deal he received from Matt. Hank suggests that Mike prove himself as a doctor at Hope Memorial. Billy laments to Carolee that Dan is sending him away to boarding school next week. Carolee promises Billy that she will talk with Dan and straighten out the situation by supper time. After Billy leaves, Carolee phones Dan and demands to see him.
Sun, Feb 7, 1971
Carolee fails to change Dan's mind about sending Billy away. Toni Ferra, Dan's niece, arrives at Hope Memorial, meets Matt, and literally bumps in to Mike. Mike accepts Matt's internship at Hope Memorial, but announces that he's moving out of the house this weekend. Matt instructs Nurse Cromwell that he wants to see Hank first thing Monday morning. Nick wonders why a good-looking chick like Toni would want to leave a swinging town like New York, but hires her despite his reservations that a young doctor will sweep her away once she's trained. Martha officially introduces Toni to Mike. Now that he's on staff, Mike wants to work with Nick on the lithium project. Steve congratulates Carolee on her pregnancy. Carolee admits to Steve that Cathy confessed to setting him up and gives him a sincere apology. Steve confides in Carolee that he enjoys Cathy's company, but they have no future together. Carolee receives a call from Dan who says he won't change his mind about Billy, and he knows how to teach the boy a lesson he'll learn.
Mon, Feb 8, 1971
Dan tells Carolee that Billy shouldn't have gone to her to get around him. Carolee confides in Althea that she should have listened to her instead of stomping around in self-righteous anger. Maggie confesses to Althea that she told Matt what happened between Althea and John. Carolee meets Toni. Dan becomes uncomfortable when Toni mentions her mother, who disappeared. Toni learns that Carolee is pregnant. Dan cautions Carolee against comparing Billy and Toni, since they don't know they're brother and sister. Carolee begs Dan not to gang up on Billy. Carolee feigns illness to speak with Billy alone, and she attempts to soften the blow of his departure. Billy reassures Carolee that he knows Dan talked her into agreeing with him, and declares that his father won't win this time.
Tue, Feb 9, 1971
Early in the morning, Carolee realizes that Billy is missing. Dan informs Carolee that Billy ran away once before when he and Dan had a disagreement. Matt refuses to say goodbye to Mike as he gets ready to leave the house for good. Maggie wishes Mike luck his first day on duty at Hope Memorial. Hank declines Matt's request that he act as Mike's supervising resident, but Matt forces him to do it. Carolee attempts to locate Billy, who is still missing after school. Matt admits to Maggie that he had an ulterior motive in choosing Hank as Mike's supervising resident. When Dan arrives home, Carolee convinces him to phone the police.
Wed, Feb 10, 1971
Carolee continues to wait by the phone, while Dan visits the cops. Billy turns up at Steve's apartment, insisting that he'll run away if Steve tells Dan. A petulant Greta refuses to wear the school clothes Maggie set out for her and throws them in the floor out of defiance. Greta capitulates when Matt intercedes, leaving Maggie irritated. Steve appeals to Billy's love for Carolee by suggesting that she's probably worried sick about him. Billy agrees to let Steve phone a relieved Carolee. Maggie, upset about Greta, is cautioned by Matt to not put too much faith in Nick synthesizing a drug to cure the girl. At Steve's apartment, Carolee thinks about how at home she once felt there and beats herself up for making hasty decisions. Billy awakens and insists to Carolee that Dan is jealous and wants to keep her all to himself. He then reminds her of how there wasn't any jealousy back in the days when Steve used to visit them at the Allison house when Dan was gone. Carolee promises Billy that if he'll return home with her, she will make Dan see that Billy's place is at home with them. Before they go, Carolee thanks Steve for his support. He replies that he'd like to help more but thinks it would make the situation with Dan even worse. Carolee softly asserts that it will be all right, but as she goes, Steve doesn't appear convinced.
Thu, Feb 11, 1971
When the cops tell him that Billy is safe, Dan phones home and is appalled to hear that the child turned to Steve for help. Carolee promises to explain later why she didn't send Dan to Steve's apartment instead of going herself. Maggie admits to John that she overheard his argument with Althea in the outpatient clinic, and although Althea is rejecting him, she does approve of his research work with children. Maggie comments that she's interested in it, too. Perhaps it would take her mind off her own troubled little girl. Dan dismisses Carolee's impassioned explanation of Billy's feelings, accusing her and Steve of being easily manipulated by an 11 year-old boy. However, Carolee manages to persuade him to let Billy stay, at least until the spring term. Before Dan goes, he comments that he needs time to decide Billy's punishment, which further upsets Carolee. Althea phones Nick, asking for his help in assembling some shelves. When Nick says that he doesn't want to crowd her, Althea insists that he stay, and she goes out to buy snacks and mixers for cocktails. While Althea is gone, John phones the apartment. Nick's voice on the other end of the line bugs him. Later, Nick tells Althea about Nick's call and offers to intercede on her behalf. Dan reveals to Carolee that Billy is being grounded henceforth from all activities except school and homework. Pleading Billy's case, Carolee casually mentions Steve's opinion, which prompts Dan to say that he intends to see Steve first thing tomorrow to tell him to stop interfering in their lives.

Carolee fails to talk Dan out of confronting Steve. Dan tracks down Steve in the doctor's lounge and chastises him for being manipulated by Billy and for dragging a pregnant Carolee into the turmoil. Althea offers Matt an apology for keeping her relationship with John a secret, but Matt ends up teasing her about her plethora of playmates. Matt tells Nick that the board hasn't yet approved his research project and realizes how sore Nick really is about John Morrison. Steve admits to Carolee that it kills him to see a woman he loves treated the way Dan treats her. Carolee is stunned to hear that Steve still loves her. Steve reiterates his love, but recognizes that it's too late because she's married to Dan and is having his baby. After he leaves, Carolee laments that he's right. It is too late, though she's having his baby.
Mon, Feb 15, 1971
Carolee recounts Steve's afternoon visit for Emma. After Dan fully grounds him as punishment and sets it for an indefinite period, Billy grouses to Carolee that Dan hates him, but says that he hates Dan, too. When Althea declines his invitation to dinner, Nick thinks she's cooled off again because of John and blows up. Later at home, Althea realizes that Nick was right when he called her a complicated, impossible dame, and she recalls the last night she and John were together on their cruise. John stops by Althea's apartment unannounced. After he convinces her to let him stay for a chat, John professes his love, explains that he understands how complicated she is, and begs her to give him a chance to make things up to her. As John moves in for a kiss, Nick arrives at Althea's door. Not realizing that John is in the apartment, Nick talks to Althea about their earlier quarrel. Althea convinces Nick to go, and after he does, she asks John to leave, too. Carolee suggests to Dan that he's being too hard on Billy, who needs to know that Dan loves him. Carolee complains to Emma that Dan unintentionally hurts people, like Steve, who Dan should've thanked for his help with Billy instead of accusing him of using the child to lure Carolee. Wanting her to face things honestly, Emma asks Carolee if she's still in love with Steve.

Maggie informs John about patient Mr. Bronlee, whose daughter might be a candidate for John's research. John admits to Maggie his jealousy for Nick. Hank lectures Mike on his poor patient work-ups and spending free time in Nick's lab instead of catching up on work. Nick orders John to keep his nose and opinions out of Nick's research department. John wants Nick's comments in writing, and when he backs down, John tells him to take his hostilities elsewhere. After Matt observes that Mike is on his way in the elevator to the 4th floor, a rude and testy Mike snaps that he's going to pathology, not Nick's lab. Maggie's mood changes when an irritable Matt arrives home and insinuates she's being a busybody in Althea's love life. Maggie walks away in anger, refusing to accept Matt's apology.

When Carolee casually mentions the pregnancy, Maggie asks if Dan knows because the father is always the last to know. Steve walks in as Althea and Carolee discuss her dilemma. Steve reminds Carolee that he'll be an obstetrician as soon as he passes his orals. Steve confides in Althea that he's worried about Carolee and hopes he isn't the cause. Nick recounts for Matt the confrontation with John. When Matt gives him the same advice that Maggie did -stay out of it- Nick wonders if they know something that he doesn't.

Billy asks permission from Carolee to entertain Greta with his model airplanes, which Dan has banned from him while he's grounded. Althea arrives at Carolee's office to discuss the situation with Steve and Dan. Althea feels that Carolee is going against her own nature by lying about the baby's paternity. Carolee argues that too many lives are stake for her to tell the truth now, but Althea reminds her that her own life is important, too. Toni stops by to see Carolee and meets Althea. Carolee tells Toni that Nick and Althea were married. When Carolee reiterates her offer of putting Toni up in their guest room, Toni declines, explaining that she was uncomfortable with the expression on Dan's face at the time the offer was made. After Billy goes to his room, Carolee irritates Dan by taking Billy's side. Dan says that the child-rearing should be left totally to him, especially with his new baby coming. He insists that he and Carolee settle it once and for all. Upset, Carolee says she has to straighten out her office first and abruptly leaves. Nick drops in unannounced to to see Althea, who is getting ready for her dinner date with John. Althea declines Nick's dinner invitation, and realizing that he could crowd her again, he backs off. Making small talk, Nick tells Althea of his confrontation with Morrison then brings up Matt's suggestion that Althea can take care of herself. Later, John arrives with a large stuffed bear for Penny, a reminder of the prize from a bingo game she lost on the cruise. John wonders why Althea finally gave in and accepted his invitation after declining so many. She replies that Maggie's campaign for him worked. She also reminds him that their past on the cruise is just that; she wants to get to know who he is now. Alone in her office, the ringing telephone bugs Carolee. Steve enters the office, having heard Carolee screaming at Dan to stop calling her. He recognizes how upset she is and worries about her emotional state. He urges her to tell Dan that if he keeps upsetting her, she'll lose his baby. Carolee counters that she can't tell him that because he's not the father. Steve quietly realizes the implication of her statement and asks if the baby is his. Before she can answer, the phone begins to ring again.

Carolee's office phone continues to ring as Steve absorbs the news that he fathered her baby. At the restaurant, John tries to adhere to Althea's rule that they forget about what happened before, but he reminds her that they are the sum of all their yesterdays. Carolee and Steve discuss how and when Carolee learned of her pregnancy. Carolee assures him that everything is her fault because she failed to trust and have faith in him. She doesn't understand why she wouldn't listen to Emma, who warned her not to move so impulsively into marriage with Dan. Matt and Maggie question Greta about the incident with Billy, and she candidly admits she crashed his model plane because she hates him, and he kept bothering her. After Greta leaves the room, Maggie ruefully wonders how it long it will be before Greta begins to hate her parents too as she does everyone else. While dancing with Althea, John rambles on about the past. He mentions receiving a cablegram from his wife Jessica the night before the ship docked. Althea is furious, unable to trust if he received the cablegram after they had made love in his cabin. Before storming out of the restaurant, she accuses him of using her for sex the final night of the cruise. Steve promises Carolee that together they'll find a way to sort out the mess they're in. The phones rings again, and Steve departs. Carolee answers the phone then assures Dan that she's on her way home.

In the morning, Emma tells Carolee that she couldn't help overhearing Carolee's long argument with Dan. Carolee explains that Dan refuses to argue. He just insists he's right and won't listen to anything she has to say. Billy asks Carolee if she's mad at him because of Greta, and she reassures him that she isn't. After Carolee leaves for the hospital, Billy confides in Emma that he hates Dan, and Dan hates him. Emma appears mortified when Billy admits that it has always been this way, and his late mother Tammy used to cry because Dan wasn't like other fathers. Maggie runs into John at the elevator and says she's anxious to pursue a lead in his research. Later, Althea recounts for Maggie the disastrous evening with John, but Maggie says that she can understand John's feelings, if Althea unjustly accused him of being a liar. John calls the outpatient clinic to apologize, but he and Althea get into fight, which Nick walks in and hears. Nick gives Althea good news about Dr. Geller. While Althea leaves the clinic briefly, John arrives and gets into another quarrel with Nick, Althea's self-appointed watchdog. Althea returns to the clinic, but when she hears what happened between Nick and John, she gets huffy with Nick, reminding him that she can take care of herself. She leaves to go see Carolee. Carolee tells a relieved Althea about the previous night and her confession to Steve. After Althea leaves, Carolee phones Steve and says she wants to see him immediately.

On her way to Parker's Department Store, Emma stops by Carolee's office to tell her that Billy honestly believes Dan hates him. Carolee suggests that Billy could be picking up on subtle clues in Dan's feelings then explains the secret of Billy's adoption. Carolee says that Dan made a promise to love Billy just as much as their child, a promise she can only ensure that he keeps if she doesn't tell him that Steve's the baby's father. On hospital rounds, Hank discovers that Mike prescribed morphine for Mr. Anders, an asthma patient, and chews him out as Matt observes. When Matt attempts to soothe Mike, he angrily asks Matt to not call him "son" and walks out. Later, Hank tells Matt that Mike is actually doing well. Grumpy from the encounter with Mike, Matt becomes annoyed with Maggie, who informs him that she agreed to having dinner with John and Althea if Althea accepts the date. Matt reluctantly agrees but reminds Maggie she should stay put of other people's problems when they have enough of their own. Carolee begs Steve to forget she ever told him the truth because nothing's changed. Steve advises Carolee she'll have to tell Dan the truth eventually, and the longer she waits, the harder it will be. He asks her to tell Dan that night that she wants her freedom.

After Toni laments the awful wallpaper in her hotel room, Martha proposes that they might share Martha's home and invites her over to dinner to see the house. Mike comes into the lab looking for Nick, prompting Martha to leave the two alone. Toni praises Mike's lithium research, and he tells her the reason behind it -that he was responsible for Greta becoming infected and having brain damage. The conversation continues to go well until Toni mentions having a wonderful example like Matt as a father. She notices Mike's quietness and wants to know why he suddenly cooled down. At that moment, Matt comes in and makes a sarcastic comment regarding the lab being a magnet for him. Toni watches quietly as Mike storms out. At home, Carolee recounts for Emma the conversation with Steve. Emma agrees with Steve's suggestion that Carolee tell Dan the truth, adding that Carolee should do it before Dan discovers the truth from someone else. Carolee counters that Steve wouldn't tell Dan, but Emma reminds her Steve is still in love with her, and she's having his baby. Matt has Mike sent to his office. When Mike arrives, Matt lights in to him about the incident yesterday in Mr. Anders' room. Mike doesn't understand what the problem is, but eventually Matt tells him that Mr. Anders was nearly given a dose of morphine again today, but a nurse caught the mistake. Matt continues to berate him, arguing that tired residents make mistakes, and Mike should've been sleeping instead of visiting Nick's lab. Mike angrily informs Matt that he was taken off of Mr. Anders' case earlier. The medication order came from another resident. Matt attempts to apologize, but Mike cites it as yet another example of Matt believing the worst in him without checking the facts. Mike storms out, leaving Matt alone and disturbed that he's driven away his son again.

Greta answers the door to Althea and shuts it in her face while Maggie is on the phone with Miss Lawson, Greta's schoolteacher. Althea has stopped by to drop off some papers related to John's research. Althea doesn't want to stay for dinner because of Greta. Maggie questions Greta about what happened at school. Greta declares Miss Lawson a tattletale, but admits that she got into trouble because she refused to go on a class trip and had to be forced into going. Maggie is dismayed when Greta says that all the kids look at her funny, and she hates them. After accusing Maggie of siding with them against her, Greta runs upstairs to her room. Matt arrives home in a foul mood following the incident with Mike earlier at Hope Memorial. An upset Maggie scares him with news of something terrible happening with Greta. He loses his temper, insinuating yet again that Maggie is working everything up into a high drama, and he can't take it. As the argument escalates, Greta eavesdrops from the staircase. Matt angrily suggests that Maggie needs a vacation from everyone, including herself, prompting her to dash out to her car in the beginning of a thunderstorm. John takes Althea a bouquet of roses to apologize for their ill-fated dinner, but she declines another evening at the trough with him. John tells her that he spoke with Dr. Geller, who speculated that Althea would compulsively punish her summer lover if she ever saw him again. Just as John insists that they settle things, Matt phones Althea's apartment looking for Maggie. Greta comes downstairs while thunder and lightning rage outside. Matt tries to reassure her, but she runs back upstairs. Driving to Althea's, Maggie remembers Matt's words to her. When she stops the car at a red light, a man suddenly opens the door and jumps into the passenger seat beside her. He pulls out a hunting knife then orders her to start driving.

Althea and John continue to argue. He eventually gives up, deciding that she needs to find a weaker man to punish. After he leaves, she phones Matt, thinking that Maggie must have gone back home because of the bad weather. Matt glances out the window at the storm which is growing worse. Still driving, Maggie tells the stranger with the knife that she's worried about the car going off the road as it's getting icy. When she further states that the road they're on is taking them out of town toward the country, he replies menacingly that it could be just what he wants. Nick and John cross paths in the foyer of the apartment building. Nick winds up John by suggesting that Althea rejected him again. John makes it clear that Nick is Althea's ex-husband; therefore, he has no privileges where she's concerned. He ends the conversation by saying that no further discussion of subject is needed because he and Althea have nothing to say to one another. Althea and Matt speak again and wonder where Maggie could be. Matt feels that Maggie won't return home and asks if he can wait at Althea's apartment. Althea's doorbell rings, and she's disappointed to find Nick instead of Maggie. Nick gives her a special note from Rico that was included in a letter that just arrived. He tells her about his encounter with John and praises the way she handled him. Althea refuses Nick's offer of a celebratory drink because she wants to wait for Maggie. Matt arrives and tells Althea about the events leading to Maggie's departure in the storm. Maggie's car skids and almost goes off the road. The stranger notes how well she handled the car. She tells him that she's from Wyoming and used to this kind of weather, but she worries because they're heading toward the mountains. It will be harder for him to get away in her car and harder for her to get back to town once he lets her out. With a gleam in his eye, he informs her that he's changed his mind. He's going to take Maggie with him.

Joe, a diner owner, is getting ready to close up when Maggie and her kidnapper Frank arrive. Frank warns Maggie to be quiet. He'll have a knife right next to her ribs the whole time. Frank ushers Maggie into a booth and slides up next to her. While Joe is away, Frank goes through her pocketbook and learns that Maggie is a doctor. Using a tube of lipstick, Maggie secretly writes "help me" inside a menu, but Frank finds it. He threatens her. As a doctor, she should know the damage a knife can do. At Martha's house, Toni isn't ready to accept Martha's offer of moving in. Toni fears Martha will tire of her after they work together all day, but she promises to think it over. They discuss Mike and how he clammed up when Toni mentioned his relationship with Matt. Martha suggests that Mike has starry eyes when he looks at Toni. Hank notices Mike sleeping in the doctor's lounge at Hope. Mike awakens and recounts the incident of Matt accusing him of incorrectly ordering morphine again for Mr. Anders. When Mike explains how Matt apologized, Hank fails to see why Mike is still so angry. He tells Mike that a real man would show forgiveness. At the diner, Maggie attempts to get Frank to leave without her. After he groused about being treated so badly by the owners of east coast dude ranches, she offers to give him her car so that he can drive back to Wyoming where he was happier. However, she encourages him too much, adding that she would love to go back to Wyoming if she could. A beaming Frank decides that Maggie brings him good luck and happily says that she's going to Wyoming with him.

With Maggie missing for two hours now, Matt and Althea can't imagine where she is. Matt phones the Allisons, just in case Maggie went to talk with Carolee about Billy and Greta, but Carolee tells him that Maggie hasn't been there. Frank and Maggie arrive at an abandoned house where he's been camping out since it was vacated by a group of hippies. An uncomfortable Maggie comes up with ideas to convince Frank to let her go, but he insists she's soft, pretty, and good luck to him. Maggie grabs the car keys and makes a dash for the front door, but Frank grabs her as the storm continues to rage around them. At the Allison house, Carolee watches Dan making notes in his personal journal. She silently tries to think of a way to broach the subject of Steve and the baby. When Dan notices the somber expression on her face, she replies that she's thinking about Billy's mother Barbara. Dan says that Barbara cheated on her husband Paolo and had a child by another man. Carolee shouldn't waste her time thinking about such a woman. Carolee ponders if Barbara should have been honest with Paolo. Dan says that he would've handled that situation differently. He elaborates with a chilling response: he would have killed the wife's lover for spoiling his happiness. Carolee is stunned at his seriousness. Waiting for Maggie, Matt explains to Althea the big mistake he made in accusing Mike without first checking the duty roster. Maggie implores Frank to let her go, arguing that she can't go to Wyoming with him because of Greta. Frank opens Maggie's pocketbook, and seeing photos of Matt and Greta, he counters that Matt will take care of Greta. Maggie pleads with him. She can't leave her baby. Frank replies that if she wants a baby, they can have one together. He grabs Maggie and begins kissing her passionately. She tries to pull away from him, but he pushes her down and forces himself on her.

Matt gets testy with the police when there's no news of Maggie. Carolee hears Steve's voice urging her to ask Dan for her freedom, then she hears Dan declaring he'd kill a man who ruined his happiness. The storm wakes up Billy who confides in Carolee that he dreamed she and Dan had a terrible fight, ending with Carolee leaving for good. Billy tells Carolee that he loves her more than Dan, and if she ever left, he wouldn't stay either. Matt berates himself for forcing Maggie out into a storm and letting her down. Althea asks a frightened and helpless Matt to let her declare a moratorium on imagined worries. Dan refers to Barbara Ferra as a tramp and cautions Carolee not to get too chummy with Toni. Carolee blanches when Dan reiterates that he would literally kill a man who humiliated him the way Paolo Ferra was humiliated by Barbara's lover. Cathy brings Steve a Chinese feast. When Steve cools her off, a confused Cathy doesn't understand what the problem is since Carolee is happily married and expecting Dan's baby. Matt receives word from the police that Maggie has been in a car crash.

Before rushing out to Hope Memorial, Matt tells Althea that Maggie's car skidded off the icy road and hit a tree. Althea informs Nick of Maggie's accident, and he insists on driving her to the hospital. Toni asks Mike for clarification in his lithium notes, and he flirts with her. Matt shocks Mike with the news about Maggie. Matt confesses to Mike the events surrounding an upset Maggie leaving their house. Waiting in the emergency ward for the ambulance, Matt and Mike share the blame and reach an understanding. After Maggie is brought in, Matt says he'll never forgive himself if she's badly hurt. Later, x-rays show that Maggie has a basal skull fracture. Maggie temporarily regains consciousness and becomes terrified when she remembers "the man."
Mon, Mar 8, 1971
Maggie is moved to a room and becomes conscious. Matt gives an amnesiac Maggie the few details of the accident that he knows. Suddenly, she screams "No, Frank!" and goes back to sleep. After finishing their Chinese feast, Steve insists that Cathy go home instead of spending the night with him. She presses him for an explanation, and when reminds her that life is simpler without strings attached, she refuses to believe that their fling is over. Nick draws parallels between Althea's accident two summers ago and the incident between Matt and Maggie that led to Maggie's accident. An uncomfortable Althea leaves as Nick keeps reminding her of their past. Talking with Matt, Maggie begins to piece together the events of the evening, but she still can't recall Frank. Althea wonders if someone could've been in the car with Maggie when she crashed. Maggie awakens and cries out. She recalls a man with a knife.
Tue, Mar 9, 1971
Maggie tells Matt about the man with the knife and how horrible it was, then she loses consciousness. Althea considers the possibility that Maggie might have been raped. Matt blames himself for whatever Maggie went through after she left the house. Toni accepts Martha's offer to be housemates. Nick finds Toni working late in the lab and is impressed that she apparently earned her science degree instead of flirting herself to success. Toni admits that she doesn't know how to flirt. She relates the problem she encountered with Mike, how touchy he became about Matt, and her advice to him. Nick likes her straightforwardness but doesn't understand why Mike matters either way. Toni replies that she doesn't know either...yet. Mike supports Matt, who dreads finding out what really happened to Maggie. Mike admits to Nick that he's getting his head together where Matt is concerned. Nick reluctantly agrees to allow Mike to actively work on the lithium project. Mike doesn't answer definitively when Nick asks him if he digs Toni. Maggie screams out that she remembers. As Matt listens, Maggie recalls Frank getting into the car with her, but she can't remember where he took her because it was so horrible. Matt phones Detective Cadman to investigate a possible criminal assault.
Wed, Mar 10, 1971
Maggie awakens with a terrible headache and no memory of where she went. Greta arrives to see Maggie and rejects Matt, whom she accuses of hurting Maggie. Not knowing the full story, Carolee tries to comfort Matt by reminding him that the accident could've been worse. Cathy wants to speak privately with Carolee. Steve confides in Carolee that he rejected Cathy's seduction, and decides that he will tell Dan the truth. A panicked Carolee begs Steve not to talk to Dan because she's scared that he really means he'd kill the man who ruined his happiness. Carolee becomes testy when Cathy grills her about why she broke up with Steve. Cathy says that Steve must be involved with another woman and resolves to discover her identity. Matt speaks with Detective Cadman, while Maggie dreams of Frank holding a knife to her ribs. Awakening, Maggie tells Matt that Frank took her to a diner. She remembers leaving with him, though her memory stops there.
Thu, Mar 11, 1971
Maggie relates to John the distrust and animosity Greta feels toward Matt now. Mike visits Maggie and comforts her when she begins to cry while telling him about Frank. At Hope to provide some consulting for John, Dr. Geller visits Althea, who testily questions how ethical he is by gossiping with John about another staff member. Althea snaps that she'd be sick or still in love with the man who hurt her if Geller was correct in his speculation that she's compulsively punishing her former lover. Later, during the consultation, Geller asserts that John was Althea's lover. John finally admits the truth and explains his side of the story. However, John says that he fell in love with the sweet woman he met on the cruise, a woman who Althea no longer is. Geller makes plans to visit Maggie. Althea informs Maggie what the police found. Maggie continues to see Frank's face then begins to remember the abandoned house. She recalls attempting to escape and Frank pinning her to the door, but her memory stops again.
