past and future

Barack Obama's election as president today at least suggests that that what Friz Freleng's "By Word of Mouse" portrays may return. An endorsement of free enterprise and mass production, it applied in the 1950s, before the factories shut down and moved to the third world so that they wouldn't have to pay the workers anything. But even the economy that we had in the '50s resulted in consumerism (and, among other things, car dependence). Oh well, at least we had rock 'n' roll.

Friz Freleng made two other cartoons like this (all three cartoons starred Sylvester). Fortunately, most of Friz's cartoons starring Sly had the slobbery cat doing what he did best: chasing Tweety and getting maimed.

Politically correct

As a family cartoon - this flops! This is quite the political cartoon though. The political message is quite correct and still very relevant. The message on mass production and consumption is still relevant, almost 50 years after this cartoon was made.

rodent capitalism

Warning: Spoilers
This economically-driven cartoon short features the story of a mouse who recollects his trip to America, telling his family over-seas about the capitalism of America. It is the last cartoon on DVD #1 in the "Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection, Volume Six". In an effort to make the cartoon contain some elements of a standard Looney Tunes short, Sylvester the cat makes an entrance part way through as the the two mice are being lectured by a Professor mouse on the ways of capitalism. This scenario causes the short to become part instructional/part cat-chases-mice. There's a joke at the end of the short about mass production when the camera pans over to a female mouse.

To correct the voice credits...on here it has Mel Blanc as the voice of all the characters. Mel was the voice of the foreign mouse while Stan Freberg portrayed the American mouse.

Capitalism from the perspective of rodents
TheLittleSongbird1 August 2015
The first of three mid-fifties 'propaganda' cartoons from Fritz Freleng, By Word of Mouse manages to be entertaining and informative with a good balance between the two. It is never going to be a personal favourite and Freleng is not at his best here or in the succeeding two 'propaganda' cartoons, but it is better than the mediocre rating suggests.

By Word of Mouse doesn't have an awful lot wrong with it actually. It won't be for all tastes (as is the case with a lot of 'propaganda' cartoons), it's not laugh-a-minute, it's not as fast and furious in the pacing as most Looney Tunes cartoons- though it does pick up when Sylvester arrives- and people will (and have done in fact) understandably criticise it for glorifying the wonders of capitalism.

It is, however, very well animated and designed. While not one of Freleng's very best-looking cartoons, with some occasional rough drawing, it's very bright and colourful, the backgrounds are simple but not at all sparse in detail and quite elegant and it's mostly well and smoothly drawn. Not gorgeous animation, but good and attractive all the same. Milt Franklyn's music score fits wonderfully and does add a lot to the action, it's rousing in energy, orchestration is rich and beautiful and rhythmically it's very lively yet dynamic. It is cleverly and intelligently written (even if adults are more likely to understand the meaning and significance of capitalism, mass production and mass consumption, although it does make a real effort writing and delivering it in a way that's understandable to youngsters too), with a priceless final joke, and while the story is pretty thin it still maintains interest thanks to By Word of Mouse's excellent ability to entertain and teach.

Especially from halfway through, By Word of Mouse is amusing, if not hilarious, and entertaining, courtesy of the antics of Sylvester, who is on typically cunning and zany form and takes the laughs and violence (which thankfully is never sadistic) to good effect. The cartoon also makes its point and delivers the information well enough without feeling too preachy, and the points it raises are still relevant now. Personally got a lot out of it, didn't feel talked down to and it was interesting to see what capitalism, mass production and mass consumption was like back then. The mice bring a really cute energy to the cartoon, while not being too sugary sweet or sugar coating what By Word of Mouse is trying to deliver. The voice acting, primarily from Mel Blanc, is very good.

Overall, a good cartoon that entertains and informs. 8/10 Bethany Cox

"Machines just to wash the poker chips . . . !"
oscaralbert2 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
. . . marvel a couple of hayseed German mice during their visit to America in Warner Bros.' prophetic 1950s Looney Tune, BY WORD OF MOUSE. This is just one in a decades-long string of Warner warnings against the 2016 Rich People Party Presidential Nominee, Donald J. "Duck" Trump. The rodents featured here are chased around during WORD by Duck-Trump surrogate Sylvester Fat Cat, as they hopscotch through the New York City Area passing the Statue of Liberty (which Duck-Trump has pledged to implode during his first 60 seconds in office), wandering through a Dump Truck casino (where they observe the job-killing automated poker chip wash, the sort of "frill" which has allowed Duck-Trump to Confabulate billions in unprecedented casino "losses," enabling him to skip out on the tax fees for the past EIGHTEEN YEARS that EVERY OTHER casino pays to keep their Dens of Iniquity from also being Black Holes in the Public Budget for the infrastructure, police, and other public servants casinos put a disproportionate strain upon, according to Today's NEW YORK TIMES), and disturbing Sylvester (that is, Duck-Trump) during one of his 3 AM Deranged Tweeting Binges high in his Trump Tower. As a professor mouse explains in WORD, Duck-Trump has turned America's so-called Free Market System on its ear with his Plump University (aka, P.U.) and his books such as THE ART OF THE STEAL. 21st Century viewers will realize that Duck-Trump NEVER will allow ANY German visitors into America, since that Humanely Big-Hearted country harbors more than one million Syrian refugees.
