Love and murder by mistake, nightmares and ruins but also awakenings
clanciai2 February 2021
This is one of Hasse Ekman's several impressingly intelligent and ingenious films, in which he does not just imitate great contemporary noirs but finds his very own way by magic means, amply presented by the possibilities of the cinema. It is elegant and exciting, the intrigue is over-intriguing, as a bet goes terribly wrong - Hasse Ekman as a journalist persuades his best friend to fake his own death and disappear, so that Hasse can be sentenced for the murder and spend some time in prison for hands-on research in actual prison life. As it turns out, his friend his accidentally murdered for real, which means prison for life for Hasse, as nothing can be proved about the experiment. Eva Dahlbeck makes a gorgeous appearance as a sudden lady of the night leading into a hopeless love affair that is terminated at once, unless something unexpected turns up. Well, this film consists of delightful unexpected things turning up.
