Jane'll Fix It
boblipton7 December 2023
Jane Withers' father was killed a year ago. She has been adopted by good-hearted Leo Carillo and his wife, Rosita Harlan. After she helps William Henry escape from a posse and she and Carillo turn the local mine's gold over to the authorities, she is sent to the schoolhouse under teacher Pauline Moore. Miss Withers discovers that Carillo was a bandit ten years ago, but one of those good ones. When sheriff Henry Wilcoxon turns out to be a bad guy, the lot of them conspire to help him escape, although he isn't terribly interested in doing so.

Miss Withers was the main competitor to Shirley Temple in this period, and given the B budgets of her movies, was likely a better return on the dollar. Miss Temple was sweet, but Miss Withers offered a more chaotic, humorous sort of movie, and this is a highly amusing one, with the good cast that 20th Century-Fox's B division offered in the period. Other noteworthy performers here include Douglas Fowley, Etienne Giradot, the ubiquitous Irving Bacon, and Russell Simpson. Miss Withers sings and dances to Carillo's accompaniment, and pulls pranks that save the day. It's a light, amusing movie that times in at a brisk 69 minutes and never drags.

Let's here it for fiery Jane!

Warning: Spoilers
She's quite a scrapper, that Jane Withers, delightful to watch in this western comedy as the loveable but hot tempered orphan taken in by the warm-hearted Leo Carrillo and his loving wife Rosita Harlan. Raised among his young sons which indicates why she's such a scrapper, Jane helps a young bandit William Henry hide from the authorities, and later aides Carrillo who is accused of a crime he didn't commit. Among the supporting cast are veteran actor Henry Wilcoxin as the villainous sheriff and the diminutive Etienne Girardot as the local judgewho was commanding when with his small stature.

The young Hispanic boys playing Carrillo's sons all look like they could be brothers, and they are absolutely adorable, making me laugh without even saying a word. Carrillo is extremely funny too, indicating that while his English doesn't come out so good the Spanish that he's thinking as he translates it proves to him how smart he is.

Pauline Moore, as the local teacher, is beautiful and charming, amused by the antics of her students even when she disciplines them. She's the obvious love interest for Henry who is on trial for murder, which causes Carrillo to bring back his past as the bandit "El Gato", friend simply because he stood up to Wilcoxin to the defend Henry. There are a few musical interludes to aide this pleasant programmer, not your typical B western.
