early Disney

This Walt Disney short starts with Julius the cat butting into the flick. He's got a hot date and eager to finish his dancing early. Alice and his cat Julius are running their hotel into the ground. They are desperate for customers when skillionaire garbage magnate Mr. Ima Hawg shows up.

It's silly that a little girl and her cat own a large hotel. It's also odd that the hotel is so empty. Obviously, Disney didn't have the time to draw too many characters. The story isn't that good or fitting. The characters feel random. This writing is weak. The animation is rudimentary. It doesn't add up to much.

Alice Loses Out (1925)

*** (out of 4)

Alice and her cat Julius are running a hotel but without any customers they simply aren't going to survive. Then junk collector Ima Hogg shows up for some relaxation but that's not going to be in the cards. This here is another winning entry in Walt Disney's Alice series. Once again the real highlight is just seeing the live action Alice mixing in with all of the animation. Even nearly a hundred years later getting to see how this was done is quite impressive and it certainly makes you understand and appreciate the early Disney pictures. This short has some pretty funny moments and especially the battle between Julius and Ima Hogg, which is certainly one of the best names in silent animation history since the character is, of course, a hog.
