A real pearl
mondejare23 February 2002
This is perhaps the best pearl of portuguese silent movie. Completely filmed in exteriors and on two completely different places as the sea and the mountains in the interior of Portugal. It is a very realistic film where we can see how people lived on the 20's on the country side in Portugal and how a man can change the life of so many different people just because of his way of seeing love and life. A very good cast of actors and very nice photograph.

Wonderful film - alas no ending!

Warning: Spoilers
This is a fascinating film and perhaps the best early example of Portuguese naturalism (see my review of Mulheres de Beira) but unfortunately the version that survives - or the version at any rate that I have seen, is quite clearly incomplete and rather seriously so since it lacks all the drama which is packed into the end of the story.

I have marked this as a "spoiler" but it is in a sense just the opposite. At the end of the story the jealous men of the village accuse Ruivo falsely of having killed a goat (in fact killed by the half-wild simpleton Gardunho). Finally, to avenge his mother's honour, the son of Aguide kills Ruivo.
