A Fighting Colleen (1919) -- Tragic Loss
PamelaShort19 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Bessie Love plays Alannah "Shrimpy" Malone, a feisty Irish immigrant living in a tenement who sells newspapers to help her widowed mother support the family. She often engages in fistfights to defend her territory from newsboys, after beating one boy, he declares his love for her. The tenement in which they live is owned by the city's unjust mayor, and Alannah helps the honest district attorney secure proof that the mayor is collecting bribes. For her help, Alannah and her boyfriend Jimmy Meehan ( Charles Spere ) are appointed superintendents of a municipal restaurant.

A Fighting Colleen starring Bessie Love is now considered a lost film. When it was originally released in November 1919, it was compared to Mary Pickford's Daddy Long Legs and Mabel Normand's Mickey by the press. The film received positive reviews, and did well at the box office. Fans of Bessie Love and silent films can only hope a copy of this 1919 silent comedy drama resurfaces.
