The 33 year old Cecil B. DeMille was being mentored by Oscar Apfel as director in this film. He obviously didn't learn much because DeMille didn't turn out to be a good director. He was a good oil painter (in the sense that he could create spectacle and attention to detail in his films), but lacked substance in terms of story and relationships.
