Will Love Triumph?
boblipton22 November 2023
Evil mastermind Thorkild Roose wants princess Ebba Thomsen to make a state marriage, but she tells him she loves Lieutenant Valdemar Psilander. Before Roos can do anything about it, the lovers are wed. Roos tries to have Psilander killed, but his friends smuggle him out of the capital. Roos tries to get Miss Thomsen to sign on to his preferred marriage, and has her taken captive to a castle under his command.

Roos has a gimply leg, and a lot of health issues. He's always clutching his heart or his side. In the midst of his rage at not being obeyed. Although this movie is a bit title-heavy, August Blom's movie flows along pretty well, and the events are clear. The acting is very good for 1912. Although the camera set-ups are static, the variety of settings and performances makes this an enjoyable early feature.

The drama runs smoothly, consecutively

This product of the Great Northern company, purchased by the Universal company to take the place of a film the negative of which was destroyed in the recent burning of one of their Los Angeles buildings, is a real feature in all departments. It is more than a feature. It is a great picture. There are splendid settings, Old World settings, of castle, of moat, of mansion; there are beautiful exteriors, of flowering field and smooth highway; there are splendid actors, and those who portray soldiers have been soldiers, that is plain; there is excellent direction. The drama runs smoothly, consecutively. Above all, there is a grade of photography that is in a class by itself. - The Moving Picture World, April 26, 1913
