Probably not a film endorsed by Kentucky's tourism industry!

"A Feud in the Kentucky Hills" is a short film by D. W. Griffith about his home state of Kentucky, albeit a dark and stereotypical one! It sure doesn't do a lot to encourage folks to visit or move to the state!

When the story begins, a nasty crack-shot decides he's going to marry girl (Mary Pickford) even though she doesn't want him. Soon after, his younger and nicer brother comes back to the hills for a visit and unlike the other brother, this one likes the girl and vice-versa. Naturally, this soon brings the brothers into conflict with each other. But before they can kill each other, an old feud re-erupts and the pair must fight side by side. What's to come of all this?

For 1912, this is a good film, though it probably won't sit so well with modern audiences. Still, it's not dull and the acting is pretty good for a Griffith short.

The action becomes like a whirlwind

An unusually tense picture, even for a Biograph. In it, after a few scenes that introduce excellently suggested types of mountaineers and give a few glimpses of mountain life, the action becomes like a whirlwind. It is a one act picture of the almost complete annihilation of a mountain family. A love story softens it some; but it is a hard picture, almost brutal. It is for those who like their pictures fiery. It will surely please the gallery and also, we think, many who arc not in the gallery; but, while we feel sure it will be a success, we cannot commend it wholly; it is likely to offend very sensitive minds, because it is a blood-thirsty picture. - The Moving Picture World, October 19, 1912
