"Cpl. Brittany Jackson's Smile" profiles an Iraq War veteran named Brittany Jackson who was deployed in 2003 at age 17. While in Iraq, Brittany endured an ambush that caused major damage to her teeth. Not only did the military refuse to pay for full mouth dental implants, they also refused to pay for sedation during Brittany's surgeries. In the four years after the ambush, Brittany saw nearly thirty different dentists. Fifteen years later, a local Pensacola dentist offered to give Brittany full mouth dental implants at no charge. Ordinarily, the surgery costs about $100k. Brittany's wife Nikki, who at age 56 is 23 years Brittany's senior, was the one who molded and designed Brittany's new teeth. At a time when the military is becoming less inclusive, it's another reminder that marginalized groups are as patriotic as anybody and sacrifice a lot for our country. It also continues the conversation about the inadequate medical care that our vets receive.
