WAY SOUTH is a screen adaptation of the poem 'No Motorbikes, No Golf' from award winning New Zealand playwright Courtney Sina Meredith. It weaves a captivating narrative through the lives and relationships of its six friends, each on a personal journey of self-discovery against the stunning backdrop of the Southern Alps.

Isileli, grappling with his own sexual identity, embarks on this adventure as an escape from the uncertainty of his life. The mountains, like his own inner turmoil, loom large and mysterious outside the plane window. As he engages in a playful conversation with Anahéra, a Maori girl with a connection to the South, their banter becomes a metaphor for his own quest to understand himself.

Upon landing, Isileli witnesses the passionate love shared by Anahéra and Mahuika, a love that has stood the test of time. Their presence serves as a reminder that love transcends all boundaries, inspiring him to explore his own desires.

Jack, trans masculine and confident in his authenticity, catches Isileli's eye not because of his appearance but due to the undeniable connection of souls. Their unbridled chemistry represents a beacon of authenticity amidst the uncertainty of Isileli's journey.

Isileli and Jack meet, Hanaha and Amankai, whom effervescent personalities add a sense of lightheartedness and acceptance. The confident embrace of their own gender and sexuality roles teaches Isileli the importance of embracing one's true self.

As the group immerses themselves in the natural beauty of the Southern Alps, and each other, their bonds grow stronger. They find solace and acceptance within their tight-knit community amid laughter and shared moments.

WAY SOUTH masterfully intertwines these personal narratives with the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Southern Alps. Its simple story portrays how the trans formative power of friendship, love, and self-discovery can flourish in the most unexpected places, leaving a lasting impression on both the characters and the audience. The film's beauty lies not only in its visuals but also in its ability to capture the complexity of human relationships and the journey toward authenticity and acceptance.
