Jennie, a poor girl, and Mrs. Manning, her blind mother, are ignored by the people in their village and reduced to abject poverty. Jennie tries to get food on credit but is refused. The new minister who has just arrived in town tries to help her by giving her money, but she proudly refuses it. After two futile attempts, the minister purposely drops a $5 bill where she will find it. She finds it, settles her bill at the store, and buys food with the rest. The interest heightens when the landlord loses a $5 bill near Mrs. Manning's home while calling for rent. Jennie is arrested for stealing money, but the minister and his sister rescue her from the village jail. They take Jennie to her home, where the money belonging to the landlord is found by town half-wit Billy, who has befriended the girl and accompanies her home with the minister and his sister. The landlord's lost bill is recovered and Jennie's innocence is proven.
