That Jane from Maine
25 May 2024
Although it failed at the box office and is today largely forgotten, writing about Doris Day the late David Shipman described this film as "a Capraesque comedy that was perhaps the best she made"; although Ealing-style might be more apt since the finale involving a steam locomotive strongly resembles 'The Titfield Thunderbolt'.

Few people are even aware that Doris Day and Jack Lemmon ever made a film together, but here it is, with them both at their best and making a great team: Day in jeans halfway between the earlier girl next door and the career woman she later became and Lemmon as an honest lawyer.

The result is a charming and mellow piece of Americana filmed in attractive autumnal Connecticut locations, with a bizarrely made up Ernie Kovacs to add vinegar to the recipe as The Man.
