The part of Royal Abbott, patriarch of the Family Abbott in "Outer Range," is the best role Josh Brolin has had since the Coen Brothers' "No Country for Old Men." Lili Taylor plays his wife, Cecilia. Imogen Poots portrays a mysterious newcomer to the area who goes by "Autumn." And the always excellent Will Patton is Royal's rival for his ranch land, Wayne Tillerson. By this point (I'm into the second season), we're seeing people from the past in the present (e.g., Ben Abbott) and people from the present flung back into the past (e.g., Sheriff Joy), making some of the show's science fiction elements more overt. Good actors working with a good script here. I'll update this review before another season.
