Review of Creepy

Creepy (2016)
3/10
The production quality of this was really high which made it all the more disappointing that the story made me want to bang my head against the wall

Warning: Spoilers
The cinematography, sound design and moment-to-moment acting is fine, but this film lacks the conviction of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's more lauded works. The characters are odd and almost never react appropriately to what is going on. Several plot points seem promising but lead down frustratingly short paths. I had hoped the overall weirdness was all in service of an interesting big reveal, but the explanation we get is so broadly ineffectual it exposes the rest of the story as a puzzling, rushed mess. . It was entirely driven by stupid people doing stupid things in service of all the plot contrivances. For instance, the main character...who we are told is this renown detective and an expert in criminal psychology, having already remarked to his wife how odd and creepy the neighbor is, is met by the neighbor's daughter and flat-out told a key detail about what is going on and his response is..."That was weird." And he does nothing else about it! Any sane person would have called the police and the movie would have been over! I wish I liked this more, but I gave it a 3/10.
