Review of X-Men '97

X-Men '97 (2024– )
9/10
The past is the future

After 2018's Infinity War Marvel's highly successfull MCU lost its direction. The time-travelling element of Endgame destroyed the MCU for me and countless others. After that film every following movie was a chaotic mess, until 6 years later apathy conquered the audience and live-action Marvel is as good as dead.

In the middle of this dark time a little animated show appears, illuminating the world with its charme and presenting a way out of the endless suffering. Suddenly the apathy I developed throughout the years vanishes. Instead hope embraces within me. Is there still a chance for Marvel? Has this company a future? X-Men '97 goes back to the roots of Marvel Entertainment, which is, of course, the animated adaptations of Stan Lee's comics. With the final episode out on this day, it is cristall-clear that Marvel's future lies in the past.

X-Men '97 is a brilliant show. Its main benefactor is its compelling story that has everything from heroism, love, friendship, loss and most importantly the ability to hold together.

The score of the Newton brothers electrifies you and, when needed, touches you on an emotional level.

The animation is superb, a mix of nostalgia and modernity.

With this first season the show got itself a place in animation olympus together with The Clone Wars and Avatar for example. A second season has been announced and I hope more of these shows are in planning, because like I said, this might be the only chance for Marvel to regain relevance.
