Pleasant Programmer From Fox
28 March 2024
Monty Woolley turns 65 and is promptly retired. He doesn't like it and tries to appeal to the head of the firm. However it turns out there's a complicated corporate structure and the printing company he works at ultimately is owned by a motor company based in Ne York. Who's the top man there? No one seems to know. However, some research at the library turns up the name. He sends a telegram to the head of the the company he works for, signing himself by the name of the head of the motor company. The next day, hair and beard dyed, he gets off the train, goes on an inspection tour, tells the people that printing firms should cherish their older artisans, and is rewarded by being told that folks like him will be offered their jobs back. He also makes a speech in front of the Chamber of Commerce and charms Constance Bennett, wife the printing company's head, Albert Dekker. The next morning, however....

Woolley shows a lot more charm than Clifton Webb would have; the role was originally planned for him. Over all, it's a pleasant if minor comedy, elevated by a cast that includes Thelma Ritter, Jean Peters, David Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Allyn Joslyn, and Minor Watson.
