Entertaining for a classical music drama
21 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It's difficult to make classical musician based dramas interesting. On the realistic side we had Beethoven Virus which was good at first then collapsed into nonsense for the second half. 'Do you like Brahms?' was realistic but painfully lacklustre and lifeless. So uneventful. On the opposite side we had Penthouse which was over the top makjang.

Maestra is something in the middle of the spectrum - it tries to be a bit more realistic but still has plot twists to keep the viewer entertained. There are shock tactics. It turns into a whodunnit mystery later on. Lots of suspicious characters. Divorce, adultery poison, murder and terrible illness. This show has it all. There are a few draggy parts and repeated scenes at the beginning of the episodes. But the show is only 12 episodes. What saves things is the conclusion. The eventual culprit was logical and well explained. So at least the ending was good.

Lee Young Ae as the driven female conductor has a tough role because her character is intrinsically unlikeable if admirable at times. Hard to be on her side. She is a perfectionist but also an ungrateful woman. Her conducting is a bit exaggerated. And her serious hairstyle is unattractive and made her even more unlikeable. The guys are cast against type. Lee Mu Saeng is the tycoon love interest. A bit evil looking for the good guy. Kim Young Jae is the deceptively sweet looking philandering husband. Lee Si won is the mistress of the husband. Sour look appropriate for the role. Villains are needed for drama.

The choice of music features serious orchestral work with some familiar favourites. Nicely abridged. Wish they had used some more beautiful romantic music.

Weighing the pros and cons, it is worth a watch since it isn't too long and the ending was good.
