Warning: Spoilers
The radiant Jean Simmons plays a very mysterious character who is suspected of being a murderer and runs off with disgraced Army officer Trevor Howard in this British thriller where they encounter plenty of danger while on the run. Living with her chilly aunt Sonia Dresdel (who was having an affair with the man Simmons is suspected of killing) and stern brother-in-law Barry Jones, Simmons isn't exactly a happy woman and her situation gets more dire while on the run.

The mood of this dark thriller is constantly gloomy with suspicions falling on Howard, Dresden and Jones simply through subtle actions, and performances all around are great. Even the minor characters have a weary way about themselves, some of them genuinely sleazy. The scene at a roaring waterfall is quite intense, and the gloomy settings of other locations adds to the damp atmosphere. Aided by an appropriate slow pacing that turns this into an intriguing unsung classic.
