Yasemin Yilmaz, the writer of this episode, cowrote "Docked", which is currently my favorite episode of the 19th season. Sadly, "First Steps" was not good. Not as bad as "Peacekeeper", but still quite terrible. Stop doing episodes, which contain done to death ideas in this series.
Let's start with the good.
. The production values of the episode are great. "First Steps" is rather well-directed, the music fits the scenery. The acting's fine for the most part. Rocky Carroll gives a very good performance.
. There are relatable themes (like an overprotective father) touched upon and the jokes are fine.
But...
. The story is agreed a very basic hostage negotiation narrative, which is pretty boring actually. There isn't a single surprise in this entire story. The dialogue is not always spot on and can come off wooden.
Overall, not good.
3/10 HK.
