Not a Computer Game
24 December 2023
After the first fight scene, I thought this must be a computer game adapted for the screen, but after researching I found it was not. I started losing interest during several backstory monologues, but I kept watching. I turned it off several times to do other things. After three days, I successfully completed the film. Sofia Boutella's look and fighting style kept me interested. They didn't do much to humanize her, which would have helped people connect with her more. She was all tough all the time. I could appreciate her skills and bad assness, but I had trouble connecting to her backstory, because her character wasn't written with much depth or vulnerably.

I can appreciate the scope of the project, and it was worth watching to see the special effects, some of the aliens, and well choreographed fight scenes. One scene with a giant spider mother was a cross between a Witcher monster and the Borg queen from Star Trek. If you like sword battles, one of the characters who is added to the team about mid way is pretty awesome to watch. There was an awesome flying sequence with a large bird creature that reminded me of flying with a dragon. I hope they bring the bird back for Part 2. I would have liked to have seen the giant bird more in Part 1.

There were too many unoriginal elements to give this a strong recommendation. People familiar with the genre will recognize an alien saloon scene and bad guys dressed in WWII German uniforms. That being said, I will most likely tune in to Part 2 in April. The chemistry between actors, fighting skill levels, and some interesting aliens are enough to make me think I will tune in to see more.
