Review of Lasso

Lasso (I) (2017)
4/10
Stupid, but some entertainment can be squeezed out of it if you are hardcore genre fan...

It's undeniable that "Lasso" resembles a movie and there are even examples of the movie having some style, care and love put into it. But it's also a stupid movie. Characters, though somewhat interesting, often act stupidly, violence is over the top (which doesn't match with the serious tone movie is trying to have) and the whole thing just lacks polish, atmosphere and talent to be better than it is. We have a main character that looks and acts like an illegal son of Enrique Iglesias and he is often irritating because his personality is that of a weak and scared city boy who is incapable to man up and face the situation until, predictably, the very end of the movie. And I know that's the point, but it doesn't make it any less irritating. His female counterpart isn't any better and manages to be a less engaging character than him, for whom we at least care for because the majority of the movie is based on his perspective. While the movie isn't so bad you will cheer for it to end (movie has a cool ending scene with a good song), it's just not what I would call a good movie and I fail to see how one of my fellow reviewers could give it 8/10 with a clear conscience while praising the unpredictability of the victims among characters like it's some kind of a monumental achievement. All in all, I think "Lasso" has an appropriate score on this page and that's why I will give it 4.5/10! It can be a onetime watch for genre fans and provide some entertainment, but it's ultimately a below average horror movie.
