Review of Cinderella

Cinderella (I) (1965 TV Movie)
7/10
Good Songs, Good Singers

This telling of the classic fairytale is a musical, courtesy of Rodgers and Hammerstein. As such, it is only as good as its score. It starts out slowly, but then the song "Impossible" brings the story brightness and tempo, and the film is elevated.

With this film, Lesley Ann Warren successfully transitions from the stage to television and it changes her career. Her training in dance and her charming voice make her perfect for the titular role. The rest of the cast is fine, if not exciting. Watch for Pat Carroll, who plays one of the evil stepsisters with deft humor.

The sets are nearly minimalist, but they work. And there are live horses onstage, so some realism is retained.

When I think back to the early color TVs, I know some viewers of the original telecast probably saw this production with technology that was chromatically challenged. Now we can watch the brightly colored costumes and scenery with more enjoyment.
