. . . original pernicious French, it refers to how American women of the Past were often chained to undesirable males, by both the force of law and necessity. Up until the 1970's or so, U. S. ladies were prohibited from owning property, making legal transactions or engaging in family planning. If they wished to attain any of these goals, they had to chain themselves to some sorry dude like a convict on a prison road construction crew. Then, for a shining 50 years, young girls could dream of being Olympians, astronauts, master plumbers, soccer stars, mountain climbers, scuba divers, jet pack jockeys, Triple Crown riders, truckers, brick masons, tympani players, carpenters, concert pianists, brain surgeons, violin soloists, nuclear rocket engineers, bronc busters, pro wrestlers, taxidermists, boxers and tons of other things formerly forbidden to expectant mothers. Now the pendulum is swinging back to the Dark Ages.
