Review of Silo

Silo (2023– )
7/10
Missed Opportunity for a Gripping Sci Fi Series

Warning: Spoilers
The 10-part adaptation of Hugh Howey's popular trilogy had an ocean of potential. With its meticulously designed dystopian world set in a subterranean silo, where the last humans survive, awaiting the recovery of the toxic-ravaged Earth, the show promised an intriguing exploration of humanity's endurance in dire circumstances.

Yet, as an avid fan of sci-fi, I find myself caught in a quandary of mixed feelings. The series diverges from the book in unexpected ways, which isn't inherently bad, but it certainly raises eyebrows. The series introduces a myriad of questions, building a complex web of intrigue, with "relics" and the past becoming contraband and criminal topics. However, with only 10 episodes - a very bad tendency nowadays - to its name and probably a year-long wait until the next season, it leaves the audience grappling with confusion and frustration. The questions piled up high, but the answers? They were as scarce as sunlight in the silo.

The characters, unfortunately, didn't offer much solace. They felt like superficial cutouts, lacking depth and relatability. Rebecca Ferguson, who plays Juliette, the engineer in charge of the furnace upon which the silo depends, sadly didn't impress. The same motionless face, the same body movements - it felt like a repeat performance of her role in Dune, which I found bad as well. I found myself longing for more expressions, more dynamism, more: life.

Silo attempts to be many things - a critique of the class system, a study in erasure, a tale of truth and denial, but in its quest to be all, it risks being none. It's a feast for the eyes with its rich world-building, but leaves you starved for coherence and character depth. It's not all doom and gloom, though. There are moments when the series shines, but quickly goes into oblivion.

Overall, Silo is a mixed bag of highs and lows. It's a series that could've been a riveting watch but falls short due to its hasty narrative and lack of depth in character portrayal. Here's hoping that the next season addresses these concerns and provides a more satisfying viewing experience.
