The Waiting Room (III) (2012)

This is exactly what working in an inner city trauma hospital is like. The patients are exactly the same kind we get, They don't have anywhere else to go, I know that some of ours have waited up to three days to see a doc. We have homeless people who have learned how to work the system in the winter. They fake seizures so well that neurologists cannot tell the difference. They also know how to fake chest pains and heart attacks to get a bed on the floors for at least a night or two. Long enough to get a room and a few good meals. Our city had two very large level one trauma centers, one was just closed down, ours just took on their patient load. I'm not trying to put the homeless down, many of them now are people who are well educated previously working people who had good jobs. They lost them due to economic changes and COVID. I had a patient who was a chef at a very high end restaurant, it closed, he is now living in a tent city with homeless people. He had a massive stroke and was found on the sidewalk. He is now severely disabled and mentally inept. He can no longer support himself if he wanted to. He could not afford high blood pressure medication and couldn't get it for free anywhere in the city. It is sad what I see every day.
