The Loud Family, Redux
30 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The title and story of this mockumentary episode, "The Loud Solomon Family" is a play on an actual series, "An American Family." It was a TV documentary that followed the life of the Loud family in California in 1973. And like Mary's own "documentary," the original documentary put a lot of emphasis on the negative parts of the Loud's lives. But luckily for us, this was played for laughs and it was indeed a very funny episode. Dick is his usual overbearing self. To hide the fact that they are aliens, Tommy is revealed as a bed-wetter, and Sally is forced to come out as a lesbian. Harry, in a bid for attention, turns himself into an alcoholic who Dick ends up taking to AAA for "treatment." What's funny [peculiar, not "funny ha-ha"] is that a lot of this show probably wouldn't get done today because it would be considered to be incorrect, or to be making fun of people we are not now allowed to make fun of. Thankfully, though, they could do such a show 20 years ago, and the creators, Bonnie & Terry Turner, did a great job in providing us with a half hour of hilarious entertainment.
