Shazam: Fury of Me
23 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Although I'm a fan of DC, I have to admit that this was the first time I actually dozed off during a movie. I purchased it on YouTube Movies, but I can confidently say that it ranks among the worst investments I've ever made. I attempted to watch it until the halfway mark, but from that point on, I found myself repeatedly skipping scenes because I could barely tolerate the film.

1. The movie begins with the introduction of two esteemed actresses, Helen Mirren (portraying the villain Hespera) and Lucy Liu (playing the role of the villain Kalypso). To my surprise, their performances in this film are incredibly lackluster. It's perplexing to witness such accomplished actresses deliver such subpar acting. It's truly disappointing to have talents like Mirren and Liu and still witness their underwhelming performances in this movie.

2. The main character development, Shazam/Billy Batson, is also bad. He should have one character because, well, he is one person. Duh. But instead, you will get like really two different persons with different personality. Also the character of Shazam is kinda off this time, he is like trying too much to be funny.

3. The Shazam family is too lame and doesn't feel connected each other. I suppose that they have spent many time fighting crimes together since the first movie, but seriously in this movie they show no chemistry between one another. There is one scene where Shazam wants to do after-meeting in Rock of Eternity, but everyone just go away for nonsense reasons.

4. The fighting scenes were also really bad, there were so many scenes that could have been more exciting. One example is when Kalypso had already planted the seed in the stadium and monsters appeared everywhere, but Shazam just stood silently on the roof, waiting for the cringe-worthy moment of "I can't do anything." Dude, you CAN fight them. Why do you just stand there? At least try your best to fight them and only then you can shout out that you can't do anything. The dragon is also super weird. This is the first time I see a dragon which doesn't spit fire; instead it produces some weird-ass blue wave that sucks your life force into it.

5. I also confuse with the villain's agenda; they want to get the magic staff because the staff was stolen from their father, and then suddenly one of them want to rule the world because she hates human? Wtf?

6. Regarding Wonder Woman's appearance, initially, it did bring me some joy as I was feeling bored during the movie. However, regrettably, her presence doesn't contribute any significant spark or value to the movie's storyline. The dialogue between her and Shazam is lackluster, and the moments when she enters and exits the scene are really dull. She just casually walks in and out... like a normal human being. Come on, she is a GODDESS, show some respect. Make her entrance more majestic.

7. There are only two things that I like from this movie: the power of Anthea and the appearance of the unicorn. The power of Anthea, Power of axis, is a power to control axis of reality and materials. Somehow I feel that that kind of power is really cool and really powerful and it's kinda rare to see such superpower in a movie. As for the unicorn, I am happy that the unicorn looks so badass with the black skin and terrifying appearance, not white and cute like in any other movies.

8. The first credit scene is kinda showing us that there will be a Justice Society movie (not Justice League, they're different). I hope that they learn A LOT from this movie on how NOT to make a superhero movie.
