Survivor Series 1993 Thoughts
Survivor Series 1993 was the 7th annual Survivor Series PPV event produced by the WWF. Show was live on November 24, 1993. It was held at the Boston Garden in Boston, Massachusetts with an attendance of 15,509. The buyrate from home was 180,000. Ouch! This was both the lowest attended and brought Survivor Series up to this point. When you look at this thin roster and the card, it's not too surprising.
5 matches were on the card. 4 were the traditional survivor series matches and a tag team title match for the Smoking Mountain Wrestling Tag Team Titles. 2 changes were up in place as Tatanka was replaced by the Undertaker for the main event and Jerry Lawler was randomly taken out of his match on-screen which was mostly because of being accused of raped and sodomizing a teen girl. Turned out to be false but something to look up another time.
The Good - It's insane the best match of the night was not cared about at all by the crowd that was dead with little chants of boring the entire match. Was pretty much a Bathroom break for the crowd. That match was the SMW tag team title match. It was obvious this was a talent exchange because the WWF again were very low on talent. The Rock N Roll Express were a popular team in the 1980s and into the early 1990s, but they were more known for being in the south. If this was in a southern city instead of Boston I think the fans would have cared more. I also enjoyed the opening survivor series match too. It got a little stale in the middle but a good match at the end.
The Meh - I couldn't get invested in the main event. Lex Luger at the time was attempted to be pushed as the big face but it's again so obvious around this timing he couldn't be put at the top. The main event was just kind of boring with the only memorable thing was the set up for Yokozuna vs. Undertaker.
The Bad - Poor Bam Bam. Being in such an awful match for the night. The survivor series match featuring the Men on a Mission & Bushwhackers as the Doink Clowns was probably one of the worst matches I've ever seen. It wasn't funny and the crowd chanting for the actual Doink to appear was just proof how bad this match was. Again extremely terrible. Also sad how the Hart Brothers vs. HBK & the Knights ended up being a drag. 3 great men in that match couldn't even save the match.
Overall - Show bombed very badly. There were a lot of replacements on this show and it was a sign of WWE not being at their best. They had a lot of issues on screen and behind the scenes as well. Some regard 1993 as THE worst year ever for WWE. Might be correct when your only good show at the time of this period is King of the Ring (a show I haven't seen in a while).
