Survivor Series 1991 Thoughts

Survivor Series 1991 was the 5th annual Survivor Series PPV event produced by the WWF. It took place on November 27, 1991 at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Attendance was at 17,500 with a buy rate from home being 300,000. This PPV was held 6 days before the upcoming PPV event, This Tuesday in Texas.

5 matches took place on the main card and for the first time ever, the WWF would produce a singles match at Survivor Series which was also the first time the WWF Championship would be defended at Survivor Series. It was believed by many that Survivor Series was getting repetitive every year and they were running out of ideas for fresh new takes for the Survivor Series matches. The WWF Championship match was definitely needed. Hulk Hogan would defend the WWF title against the Undertaker. We also had a build up set for Randy Savage in-ring return against Jake Roberts for the PPV next week.

The Good - I think the opening was the only good match of the night. It unfortunately had a stupid ending that prevented me of giving it a higher rating but it was enjoyable. The Najor Boy Ric Flair looked hot in the WWF ring. He already was looking well working in that ring with the likes of Roddy Piper and Bret Hart. I do oddly recall one Elimination didn't make sense. You know, WWF breaking own rules. Undertaker winning the WWF Championship is still a highlight (though sadly, a huge lying babyface changed his future plan). Jake Roberts & Randy Savage both cut amazing promos for their build up for next week.

The Meh - I hear Taker vs. Hogan as a match isn't too favorable among fans but I didn't find it horrible. It was pretty bland but they had an even worse match a week later. The spot though for the tombstone on the chair was poorly done and I'm not talking about the injuring opponent thing. And with WWF at the time always wanting great closing to the shows, I think it would have been fine to make this an exception for this match happening last.

The Bad - The rest of the Survivor Series matches were unfortunately bad or not too memorable. The Rockers and Beverly Brothers carried one of them and even that didn't save the match. However the teasing heel turn worked well for later between one of the Rockers *cough*legend*cough*. The main event wasn't really anything special but just a match to send the crowd home happy. Sadly the Road Warriors never got to be booked as the great stars they were outside of the WWF.

Overall - Show aged poorly in numerous things. This night was teased for Flair & Hogan in the future but that was changed after testing fails at house shows and Taker as WWF champ here being short lived because of an InJUry he gave Hogan. Also them spending so much of the night trying to hype up a PPV airing the next week was making this PPV feel meaningless. Thumbs down.
