Survivor Series 1990 Thoughts

Survivor Series 1990 was the 4th annual Survivor Series PPV event produced by the WWF. It took place on November 22, 1990 at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Connecticut. Attendance was at 16,000 with a buy rate from home of 400,000 (the highest among the first 11 Survivor Series PPVs). This event is highly remembered for being the debut of Mark Calaway in the WWF as the Undertaker, who would become one of the most iconic superstar icons in pro wrestling history.

6 matches took place on the main card. A new (and to this day only time) concept was used for this night of where the WWF would have the traditional survivor series matches but the remaining survivors of the teams would battle it out in another Survivor Series match (of obvious respective teams of faces & heels). Some changes were made before the show of members of teams as Haku replaced Rick Rude who left company over pay dispute & unhappy booking. Bad News Brown was replaced by the Undertaker over failed promise made during contract signing. Finally an additional storyline was added up to this event of Sgt. Slaughter becoming an Iraqi sympathizer (a nod to the Gulf War at the time). Typical Vince idea.

The Good - I must say Undertaker's debut in retro view is just as iconic as ever. Cartoony characters that took about 6-7 more years for WWF to realize are stale made an excepcion for this night. Undertaker would become one of the most important and beloved stars, eventually becoming one of the greatest of all time. To this day he's among my top favorites ever. To be honest, I don't think I would even trade anyone for him. The match he was involved in was also a good match. He looked strong in the debut and was eliminated in a protected way. While the middle of the Dream Team vs. Million Dollar Team was a bit slow, it got really good it's last 5-10 minutes with Bret Hart battling Ted DiBiase.

The Meh - Hulkamaniacs/Natural Disasters was kind of boring and the ending with Barbarian vs. Hogan was clear from a mile away of what it was coming to. I must include this was near the end of Hulkamainia running wild with fans. Opening also was okay. I think Mr. Perfect was the highlight of the match.

The Bad - The Alliance vs. The Mercenaries was awful. There is no doubt one of the stars in the match, Nikolai Volkoff, was out of his prime to be in the ring. The ending wasn't executed very well for a way to protect Sgt. Slaughter for what they had planned for him in the future. The main event was also bad and predictable. Was clear they lost faith in Warrior to be on his own as he didn't have much time and barely did much. Warrior unfortunately couldn't work as the top guy. The Hogan ending we had was the way to go unfortunately. I almost forgot about Vince's big reveal of the Egg. Boy what an embarrassment. What were they thinking of hyping something this big?

Overall - Not good sadly. Great concept poorly used. I don't understand why they never done it again but oh well. I almost gave this a double thumbs down but I think they tried. One match show mostly because of a special someone.

Score - 4 out of 10: Boring

0 = Terrible : 1 = Bad/Lackluster : 2 = Decent : 3 = Good : 4 = Awesome : 5 = One of the Best of all Time
