Wellington sends a force to blow up a fort containing General Calvet's ammunition and supplies. Leading to the unit is Colonel Brand, an officer who Sharpe has served under before and looks up to. Also in the party is a disfigured major who is an explosive expert and Major General Ross who sees this as an intelligence-gathering opportunity. Little do they know that it is a trap to capture General Ross and that Colonel Brand is working for the French.
Another great Sharpe adventure. As usual the plot isn't very watertight and some of the military aspects aren't realistic but it's still good fun. The action scenes are great, as always, and it's a wonderfully entertaining. The domestic situation with Jane, the journalist and Harris is also quite amusing.
