I'm not sure what was going on behind the scenes with Masterson at this point but this ending was pure BS. As soon as Nick said that he would come for the family, I'm sure Rooster would have gone right to the Ranch and told the family what was going on and to be prepared for the worst. Then, Rooster would have gone right to the cop shop and told the police department that a felon with a gun broke into his cabin and threatened to kill him if he didn't leave town. "Either you take care of it or my family will". That would have been the end of Nick right there, he would have been headed back to prison.
