This Chinese period drama is a series all about love, not everyday ordinary love between mere mortals, but it is a series of fantastic tales of love and loss between humans, demons and spiritual entities. One love story runs the whole length of the show and really is the type of selfless love to end all loves. The love of these two characters displays devotion that is truly on an epic scale. However, the show really is lighthearted and quite melodramatic but if you like the boisterous romps typical of Hong Kong movies you might like this. All the main characters are essentially attractive, young handsome and pretty faces abound but the story has proper dark elements which is brought to the forefront by a battle between the Good and Evil spirits in the tale.
Deeper meanings? Love overcoming love between the classes, races, religious groups for better or for worse - much like marriage itself, I don't know - thought it was all very well written and produced.
I was surprised how affecting this series was, and how effective the main love story built and built up until the last episode and the last moments of that episode. Very good show, I give it a rare 10/10.
