American Experience: The Polio Crusade (2009)
Season 21, Episode 2
10/10
A very good, very painful to watch documentary
1 February 2023
When this documentary was made in 2009, no one had heard of COVID. No one who has lived through - what we hope to have been - the worst of the COVID epidemic will be able to watch this documentary without reflecting on how differently so much of the American public reacted to news of the first COVID vaccine from the way American parents reacted to the introduction of the Salk vaccine around 1950. COVID was more devastating, in this country, than polio had been, yet seven decades of denigrating science by politicians here took its toll.

I strongly recommend that everyone watch this documentary. But with a warning: there is a lot of newsreel footage of little children who were crippled by the disease. That is very difficult to watch. Sometimes I had to turn away my eyes.

But never my ears.

Nor should you.

My heartfelt thanks to those who produced this fine film.
