Lost in Mountain City - Review of "Lost, Indulgence"
23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In 2007, several co-productions directed by Mainland China directors appeared in Hong Kong Cinema, including Kiefer Liu Xiaoguang's "Two Stupid Eggs" at the beginning of the year, "Ocean Flame" by Liu Fendou and "Lost, Indulgence" by Zhang Yibai. In the past, co-productions mostly consisted of Hong Kong directors cooperating with Mainland actors and production teams. Famous Mainland directors Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou worked with Hong Kong actors and filmmakers respectively on large-scale productions in order to draw on the superior production quality and talents of Hong Kong Cinema.

In 2007, these co-productions by Mainland directors were not big productions. Among them, Liu Fendou's "Ocean Flame" was a typical art film, and Hong Kong actor Simon Yam Tat-Wah served as the producer and participated in the role of the police. The form of cooperation between filmmakers from the two places has begun to change. Among the most popular directors in Mainland China, apart from Feng Xiaogang, Kiefer Liu is also one of the few commercial directors who are famous for their small productions. "Two Stupid Eggs" recruited Hong and Taiwan actors such as Annie Liu Sum-Yau, Gordon Lam Ka-Tung, Sam Lee Chan-Sam to cooperate with Mainland actors such as Guo Tao, with good results.

Zhang Yibai who once directed Carina Lau Ka-Ling and Hu Jon starred in "Curiosity Kills the Cat" (2006), this time he cooperated with Hong Kong Sundream Motion Pictures "Lost, Indulgence", and also used a number of Hong Kong actors to cooperate, including the protagonists Karen Mok Man-Wai, Eric Tsang Chi-Wai, Eason Chan Yick-Shun, the first two of them, they plays a Mainlander, while Eason Chan plays a Hong Kong businessman. Karen Mok and anther protagonist, Mainland actress Jiang Wenli, have a very difficult relationship.

The film tells the story of Wu Tao, a taxi driver played by Eric Tsang. One night he was driving a taxi and had a traffic accident with a passenger, Su Dan (play by Karen Mok). He and his car fell into the river, Su Dan was seriously injured, and Wu Tao could not find the body. Wu Tao's wife Li (played by Jiang Wenli) and their son had to take care of this courtesans Su Dan in order to avoid she suing them, which made a major change in their lives. For Hong Kong audiences, "Lost, Indulgence" lacks attractiveness in terms of rhythm and handling of the plot. In addition, the film's background is in Chongqing, Sichuan. The film's melancholy and sadness in the mountain city is very consistent with the protagonist's inability to get out of the predicament of life, but the film lacks tension in the layout, and the ending is also lacking in convincing.
