Soooo similar to "boomtown", with clark gable, from mgm, also released in august 1940. Flowing gold was warner brothers version. This one has really great back stories to the various characters. Johnny is wanted for something, and is on the run. There's a competition between two indie oil men in the old west. Some really fun folks in the cast... tillie ( jodie ) was also the mean but funny waitress in w.c. Fields' "never give a sucker an even break". Cliff edwards is in here with his voice and his ukulele. Even sings a couple songs. Linda (frances farmer) will have to make up her mind between johnny (garfield) and hap (obrien). Well written story directed by al green.... had directed the jolson story, and so many other great films. His films won oscars, even if he did not. It's a good one. But so is the one with tracy and gable. Watch em both.
