The first part of The Cruellest Month is about an old residential building that was used to house indigenous kids grabbed up by the government. Some kids are using the house for silly Satanic rituals, and they are discovered by a group of townspeople who have gone to burn the place down. What transpires is the discovery of the body of a young man, whose father worked at the school and terrorized the kids. Gamache, LaCoste, and Beauvoir investigate and find a town that wants to be rid of this building and all that it represents. There seems to be some hidden information and the police must wade through this. Now that we are in the second episode, we begin to get a feel for the individual characters, which is a strength of the books.
